Kano Govt Supports Edo Attack Victims with Cash, Food, Assures Continued Care

The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting families affected by last year’s incident in Edo State, assuring that efforts to secure compensation are ongoing. The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this during a visit by a government delegation to the Bunkure Palace in Kano. He explained that the visit was aimed at further sympathising with families of those who lost their lives while returning home for the Sallah holiday. Waiya stated that the state government is actively engaging the Edo State Government to ensure that appropriate compensation is paid to the victims and their families, noting that the process is on course. He recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had earlier approved the distribution of financial support and food items to those affected. According to him, families of the 16 slain victims were given N300,000 each, while the 13 survivors who sustained injuries received N200,000 each. In addition, beneficiaries were provided with two bags of rice each. The Commissioner noted that the gesture reflects the governor’s commitment to easing the hardship faced by the victims’ families, especially after earlier delays caused by some officials. He urged the families to remain patient, assuring them that the government remains committed to their welfare and that the children of the deceased will continue to receive necessary support. Responding, the District Head of Bunkure, Aminu Isah Umar, expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for the intervention. He noted that the support would go a long way in assisting the affected families and alleviating their suffering.

Separate Eid Prayers Signal Growing Political, Traditional Divide in Kano

For the first time in recent years, Kano State witnessed three separate Eid-el-Fitr prayers, a development that underscores widening divisions within the state’s traditional and political leadership. The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led the Eid prayer at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground at about 8:00 a.m. The prayer attracted top government officials and residents, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruq, and the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. A close associate of the Emir, Muhammad Dallatu, disclosed that the sermon centred on unity, peace, and harmonious coexistence among the people of Kano. Meanwhile, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, conducted a separate Eid prayer at the Nasarawa Palace at roughly the same time. The prayer was led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa, who also emphasised unity, peace, and the need to support stability in the state. Simultaneously, the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, held his Eid prayer at his residence mosque along Miller Road. He was joined by the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Kofar Mata, and other loyalists. Saifullahi Hassan, a media aide to Kwankwaso, said the gathering was conducted in an atmosphere of unity, reflection, and gratitude to Allah. The separate Eid prayers highlight ongoing tensions in Kano, rooted in the 2020 emirate crisis, which led to the dethronement of Sanusi II and the installation of Bayero, as well as the 2024 reinstatement of Sanusi II, developments that have resulted in parallel royal authorities. Political realignments have further deepened the divide, particularly following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the NNPP to the APC. Historically, Eid prayers in Kano have served as a unifying platform, bringing together the Emir, political leaders, and residents at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground. The current situation, however, marks a significant departure from this long-standing tradition, reflecting growing rifts within the state’s traditional and political structures.

Sultan Declares Friday as Eid-el-Fitr in Nigeria

The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee, has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, marking the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr in Nigeria. In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the Chairman of the Committee and Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, said no report confirming the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal was received from committees across the country on Wednesday, March 18, the 29th day of Ramadan. He stated that Thursday, March 19, would therefore be observed as the 30th day of the holy month of Ramadan. The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Kabuga Branch, has extended humanitarian support to the Nasarawa Children’s Home in Kano, as part of efforts to assist vulnerable children and complement government initiatives. Chairman of the branch, Engr. Dr. Gambo Haruna Yunusa, said the benevolent gesture was aimed at supporting the children while reinforcing the association’s commitment to social responsibility. He explained that the intervention followed an earlier assessment visit to the facility, during which the management highlighted their most pressing needs. According to him, the branch provided items worth over N600,000, covering six major areas identified as critical for the smooth running of the home. Dr. Yunusa noted that the NSE remains committed to community development through impactful initiatives, in line with its core values. Speaking after receiving the items, Amina Abdullahi Sani expressed appreciation to the NSE Kabuga Branch, describing the gesture as timely and impactful. She noted that the donation would significantly support the welfare of the children and complement the efforts of the Kano State Government. The Commissioner, who said the visit coincided with her inspection of Sallah preparations at the facility, assured that the donated items would be judiciously utilized. She also called on philanthropists, corporate bodies, and other professional associations to emulate the gesture, describing it as both a social responsibility and a commendable act of charity. Amina Abdullahi Sani further disclosed that the children’s home operates separate storage systems for government supplies and donations, ensuring proper management and accountability. She added that the state government has concluded arrangements to provide Sallah items for the children to enable them celebrate the festive period comfortably, noting that additional provisions, including livestock for meals, are already in place to ensure they feel included like their peers. The benevolent visit was attended by executive members of the NSE Kabuga Branch, including Prof. Muhd Shuaibu Abubakar, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Bayero University Kano, and Professor Aaron Aboshio, among others.
