Bauchi deploys 2,187 forest guards to protect reserves, tackle environmental crimes

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has deployed 2,187 newly trained personnel of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Forest Security Services (BSVFSS) to strengthen the protection of forest reserves, curb environmental crimes, and enhance security across the state.

The deployment followed a passing-out parade held at the Police Training School, Yelwa, where the governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Mohammed Auwal Jatau, formally authorised the operatives to commence duties in accordance with established laws and regulations.

Governor Mohammed said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Bauchi’s forest reserves and natural resources, which play a vital role in agriculture, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and the livelihoods of thousands of residents.

He noted that the state’s forests have increasingly come under threat from illegal logging, poaching, indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, and other environmental crimes that undermine sustainable development.

According to him, the newly deployed forest guards will serve as a frontline force in protecting forest reserves, preserving ecological balance, and preventing the destruction of valuable environmental assets.

The governor also expressed concern that some forested areas have become hideouts for criminal elements, stressing the need for enhanced surveillance and security presence within the reserves and surrounding communities.

“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to peacebuilding. It symbolises integrity and discipline,” he said.

“I urge you to be good ambassadors and strictly observe the rules of engagement in all your operations to achieve the objectives of establishing the Forest Guard Corps.”

Mohammed explained that beyond environmental protection, the recruitment of the 2,187 personnel was also designed to create employment opportunities for youths while strengthening community-based security mechanisms.

He expressed confidence that the training received by the recruits had adequately prepared them for the responsibilities ahead and urged them to carry out their duties with professionalism, dedication, and integrity.

The governor reminded the operatives that they have a responsibility to protect the state’s natural heritage and ensure that forest reserves remain secure for future generations.

He warned that any act of indiscipline, abuse of authority, or collaboration with criminal elements would attract appropriate sanctions.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Musa M. Bulus, charged the newly trained personnel to uphold discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He urged them to respect the rights of citizens while contributing effectively to the protection of lives, property, and critical environmental resources.
