Jigawa Civil Defence arrests 20 suspects over illegal tree felling and charcoal production

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has arrested 20 suspects for engaging in illegal tree felling and charcoal production without authorization.

The State Commandant of the Corps, Alhaji Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, disclosed this during an interview with journalists in Dutse as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb environmental crimes and activities that contribute to environmental degradation.

According to Commandant Ingawa, the operation was launched in response to the increasing rate of indiscriminate tree felling across the state. He explained that many individuals have been cutting down trees to produce charcoal, firewood, and timber, posing a serious threat to the environment.

He stated that the command arrested a total of 20 suspects. Ten were apprehended in Birnin Kudu and Kazaure Local Government Areas for allegedly felling trees to produce charcoal and timber. Another six suspects were arrested for illegal tree felling and charcoal production, while the remaining four were accused of cutting down trees for timber.
