Lionel Messi retires from international football with Argentina

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina after earning 207 caps for the national team.

Messi, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, enjoyed a remarkable international career, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and finishing as a runner-up in 2014 and 2026. He also guided Argentina to two Copa América titles.

Announcing his decision, the 39-year-old said it was painful but acknowledged that the time had come to bring his international career to an end.

“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come,” Messi said.

He added that he had always given everything for the national team, regardless of whether Argentina were winning or struggling.

“I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”

Messi said his love for the national team would remain despite his decision to step away.

He also pointed to the emergence of a new generation of Argentine players who deserve the opportunity to represent the country.

“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to offer, and moreover, there are some exceptional young players emerging who deserve this opportunity.”

The Inter Miami forward also revealed that the death of his father, Jorge, earlier this month contributed to doubts about whether he would continue playing international football.

Messi further disclosed the physical difficulties he experienced during Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain in July.

“My legs could no longer continue,” he said, explaining that he had tried to push himself beyond his physical limits but was unable to do so.

Messi will, however, continue his club career with Inter Miami, where his contract runs until 2028.
