Immigration: Tinubu approves lifetime pay for retired CGs, DCGs, says minister
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said President Bola Tinubu approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General (CGs) and Deputy Comptrollers-General (DCGs) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), alongside measures to address promotion backlogs and improve personnel welfare.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) training held at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja.
He commended Tinubu for clearing promotion backlogs across services under the ministry, saying at least 50,000 personnel had advanced to new ranks and positions within three years.
“It has never happened before, but Tinubu did it. He also increased the volume of recruitment, where we now have no fewer than 40,000 new recruits at once,” the minister said.

He added that the administration had approved salary increases and improved hazard and peculiar allowances for personnel.
Lifetime pay for retired immigration chiefs
The minister also highlighted what he described as improvements in the welfare of serving and retired personnel, particularly the benefits approved for former heads of the Immigration Service.
“Previously, CGs had a pension of about N130,000; it was not encouraging. But what did the president do? He signed and approved a salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He praised Tinubu for supporting the services under the ministry, urging personnel to reciprocate by performing their duties diligently and improving service delivery to Nigerians.
“This president has cared for the services more than any president in the history of Nigeria. He has given you his all,” he said.
The minister added that the administration expected personnel to fulfil their responsibilities and ensure that Nigerians received better services.
Tinubu’s long-term vision
Tunji-Ojo also described the President’s policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda as efforts to strengthen public institutions and deliver lasting benefits beyond his tenure.
According to him, Tinubu is focused on building systems that will remain effective after he leaves office.
“President Bola Tinubu has never been about the immediate, but the future. He understands that the most prosperous nations do not boil, cook, and eat their seeds; they plant them,” he said.
“What this president is doing is planting the seed so that there will be abundance for the future.”
The minister noted that although the President would not remain in office indefinitely, the institutions strengthened under his administration would continue to serve future generations.
