Don’t undermine Islamic education, Mariri chief Imam tells Muslims

The Chief Imam of Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi Juma’at Mosque in Mariri, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, Sheikh Sunusi Adam, has urged Muslims to reject the notion that Islamic education is inferior or irrelevant in today’s world.

The cleric made the call during his Friday (Juma’at) sermon delivered at the mosque, where he emphasised the importance of Islamic knowledge as a compulsory obligation for every Muslim.

According to Sheikh Sunusi Adam, acquiring Islamic knowledge is an individual responsibility that every Muslim must fulfil, unlike Western education, which, he said, can be pursued by some members of society to provide specialised services and expertise for the benefit of the wider community.

He explained that while Islam places great emphasis on religious education, it also encourages Muslims to pursue Western education to enable them participate fully in modern society and contribute meaningfully across various professions and sectors.

The Chief Imam noted that the combination of Islamic and Western education would strengthen the Muslim community and equip it to address contemporary challenges while remaining guided by Islamic values.

Sheikh Sunusi Adam also urged members of the public to refrain from promoting negative perceptions about Islamic education or portraying Muslim societies as backward because of their religious identity.

He further called on leaders at all levels to take appropriate measures to address such narratives, including monitoring media platforms and taking action against individuals who deliberately spread misleading or harmful information capable of influencing public perception.

The cleric stressed the need for collective efforts to promote balanced understanding, protect religious values and encourage educational development for the benefit of society.
