Anniswan Women Health Initiative (AWOHI) has launched an initiative to improve the welfare, health and well-being of elderly people at the Old People’s Home in Shahuci, Kano State.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Maryam Rabi’u Muhammad, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the facility, where the group donated food items, body cream, soap, ablution containers and other essential supplies.

She said the visit was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the organisation and the home, while identifying areas where AWOHI could provide support to improve the living conditions of the elderly residents.

As part of the initiative, the organisation introduced a programme titled “Our Elders, Our Heritage,” designed to promote the dignity, health and well-being of older people.

According to the organisation, the programme will focus on addressing loneliness and social isolation among elderly people, particularly those living in care homes or lacking adequate support from their families.

AWOHI said it would provide essential household supplies, hygiene products, clothing and other necessities based on the needs of the beneficiaries.

The programme will also include health awareness campaigns and medical check-ups in collaboration with qualified healthcare professionals. Elderly people requiring specialised medical attention will be referred to appropriate healthcare facilities.

The organisation added that the initiative would provide opportunities for elderly people to share their life experiences, wisdom and cultural heritage with younger generations, thereby promoting respect for older people and preserving the community’s history.

Speaking on the initiative, Maryam Musa, an official of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), welcomed the organisation’s activities and expressed support for efforts aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable members of society.

She noted that initiatives of this nature could contribute to improving the well-being of elderly people and strengthening collaboration between government agencies and non-governmental organisations.

The visit was also attended by a representative of the Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

AWOHI said it hoped to collaborate with government agencies, healthcare institutions, private companies, philanthropists and other stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

The organisation added that it would monitor the initiative through records of visits, donations, feedback from beneficiaries and reports of activities carried out.

AWOHI reaffirmed that elderly people deserved dignity, care, respect and love, urging government authorities and members of the public to support efforts to improve their welfare.
