Yusuf Commissions Disease Control Centre, Launches Sickle Cell Centre in Kano

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) and launched a Sickle Cell Centre as part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and public health services across the state.

The Governor also flagged off the distribution of free maternal and Accident & Emergency commodities, new hospital bed sheets, and 300 customised digital blood pressure monitors at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

The Kano Centre for Disease Control, located within the premises of the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Kano Municipality, is designed to strengthen disease surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, emergency preparedness and rapid response to disease outbreaks.

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Yusuf described the centre as a landmark achievement in the administration’s efforts to build a resilient and responsive healthcare system.

He said the facility would improve disease surveillance, prevention, diagnosis and emergency response, while strengthening Kano’s capacity to tackle emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said the centre would play a critical role in the prevention, detection, monitoring and control of communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, cholera and HIV/AIDS.

He added that the facility was equipped with modern technology and trained personnel to enhance early outbreak detection, emergency response and collaboration with health institutions and development partners.

At the Sickle Cell Centre, Governor Yusuf said the facility would provide comprehensive care for people living with sickle cell disease, including free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, health promotion and specialised management under one roof.

He assured patients of his administration’s commitment to providing essential medicines and other support to improve their health and wellbeing.

The Governor also explained that the distribution of 300 customised digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees was aimed at encouraging regular health checks and addressing concerns over sudden deaths associated with hypertension.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining its free maternal and Accident & Emergency commodities programme, which he said had already saved thousands of lives across the state.

The Commissioner for Health commended the Governor for his commitment to improving healthcare delivery, while the Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, said the interventions would benefit thousands of Kano residents.

Dr. Labaran Yusuf also acknowledged the contributions of development partners whose technical and financial support contributed to the completion and equipping of the Kano Centre for Disease Control.

The Kano State Government said the latest interventions formed part of its broader efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure, disease prevention, emergency preparedness and access to quality medical services across the state.
