Gusau quits NFF presidency amid national team setbacks

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned from his position amid mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.

Gusau confirmed his resignation on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, bringing his tenure as head of the country’s football governing body to an end.

His resignation comes after a difficult period for Nigeria’s national teams, with the Super Eagles missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons suffering a historic failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Eagles were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup qualification race after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African play-off, while the Super Falcons lost to South Africa in the play-off for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The setbacks have intensified criticism of the NFF administration and generated calls for changes in the management of Nigerian football.

Gusau’s resignation is also coming amid a wider leadership crisis within the federation, with several members of the NFF Executive Committee reportedly stepping down. Reports indicate that eight of the 13 board members had resigned.

The NFF Congress has consequently been summoned for an emergency meeting in Abuja to deliberate on the latest developments, the status of the federation’s leadership and the way forward under the NFF statutes and applicable football regulations.

Gusau was elected NFF president in September 2022, succeeding Amaju Pinnick. His resignation now opens a new chapter for the administration of Nigerian football as stakeholders await the outcome of the emergency Congress and the next steps towards restoring stability to the federation.
