Kano Positions for Livestock Revolution as FG Unveils Investment Roadmap

Kano State has reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a leading hub for livestock development in Nigeria as it deepens collaboration with the Federal Government to unlock the sector’s vast economic potential through strategic investment, value addition and industrial growth.

The commitment was underscored when the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, received the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, on behalf of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The meeting focused on practical strategies to expand local processing, attract private investment and strengthen critical segments of the livestock value chain capable of generating employment, increasing incomes and stimulating economic growth across the state.

Among the key proposals discussed were the establishment of a modern abattoir and the rehabilitation of the existing slaughter facility to improve meat processing, revive Kano’s renowned hides and skins industry and enhance the value of livestock products for both domestic consumption and export.

The discussions also explored investment opportunities in the poultry, dairy and fisheries subsectors, with emphasis on expanding cold-chain storage infrastructure, improving milk processing and creating wider economic opportunities for livestock producers, particularly women and young entrepreneurs.

Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo described Kano as one of Nigeria’s foremost livestock-producing states, noting that its long-standing position in livestock trade provides a solid foundation for greater investment and industrial expansion.

He said value addition within the livestock sector would not only create employment opportunities but also position Kano to compete more effectively in regional and international markets.

«”We will collaborate closely with the Ministry to ensure that this modern abattoir becomes a reality. It will create jobs for our youths, revive the hides and skins industry, and improve the quality of meat processing for both local consumption and export,” Garo stated.»

On his part, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described Kano as one of the states best positioned to drive the Federal Government’s livestock transformation agenda, citing its vast agricultural resources, strategic location and extensive water infrastructure.

The minister recalled an earlier meeting with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in Abuja, saying the governor’s response demonstrated Kano’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government in advancing the livestock sector.

“When I met His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in Abuja and briefed him on our plans, he simply said, ‘Kano is ready and waiting for you.’ To me, that statement says it all,” Maiha remarked.

The visit concluded with an exchange of commemorative gifts.

The minister presented a copy of The Nigeria Livestock Master Plan (N-LMP) Investment Roadmap 2026–2030 to the Deputy Governor on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, while Garo presented a souvenir to the minister on behalf of the Kano State Government.

The engagement reflects the shared commitment of the Federal Government and Kano State to harnessing the enormous potential of the livestock sector as a catalyst for job creation, food security, industrialisation and sustainable economic development.
