FUD professor secures N25m TETFund grant for research on tackling banditry through alternative livelihoods

A Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, Professor Ado Garba Jangargari, has secured a N25 million grant under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) programme for a study aimed at addressing insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

The grant was awarded in recognition of his research proposal titled, “Tech for Peace: Engaging Northern Nigeria’s Pastoralists in Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping.”

The research seeks to explore how technology-driven initiatives can create alternative livelihood opportunities for pastoral communities, particularly youths, with the objective of reducing their vulnerability to criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping.

The project is expected to examine innovative approaches that can diversify income sources beyond traditional livestock-based livelihoods, while promoting economic empowerment, social inclusion, and sustainable peace across affected communities.

Analysts have described the study as timely, given the persistent security challenges facing many parts of Northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping, and rural insecurity continue to disrupt economic activities and threaten social stability.

The TETFund National Research Fund supports high-impact research projects designed to provide practical solutions to Nigeria’s developmental challenges, including security, education, agriculture, healthcare, and economic growth.

Members of the Federal University Dutse community welcomed the award, describing it as a reflection of the institution’s growing reputation for research excellence and its contribution to national development through evidence-based solutions.

Professor Jangargari is expected to commence implementation of the project under the TETFund programme, with findings anticipated to provide policy recommendations and innovative strategies for addressing insecurity through livelihood diversification and technology-based interventions.
