Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi: A Tribute to a Scholar, Peacemaker and Spiritual Giant

For more than seven decades, he stood as a teacher of immense depth, a jurist grounded in tradition, a spiritual guide of rare sincerity, and a champion of peace whose moral authority shaped communities across Nigeria and beyond. Sheikh Dahiru devoted his entire life to the Qur’an—memorising it at a young age and teaching it for over half a century. His network of Qur’anic schools produced thousands of memorizers, while his Ramadan Tafsir became a unifying spiritual gathering for Muslims seeking clarity, humility and deep understanding. He offered interpretations that connected classical knowledge with contemporary challenges, always with remarkable simplicity and compassion. As a custodian of the Mālikī jurisprudential tradition, Sheikh Dahiru played an essential role in preserving the continuity of West Africa’s historic Islamic heritage. His guidance on legal and moral matters reached millions, bridging generations and upholding the integrity of classical scholarship within modern society. Within the global Tijjaniyya Sufi community, he remained a towering figure—revered for his spiritual discipline, insight, and unwavering commitment to the teachings of Sheikh Ahmad Tijani and Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse. His leadership brought unity and refinement to countless disciples, strengthening the bonds of a spiritual network that spans continents. Rather than encouraging retaliation, Sheikh Dahiru urged restraint, forgiveness, patience and peaceful coexistence. His call for calm, in a moment charged with grief, elevated him in the eyes of the nation as a true apostle of peace—one who understood that justice must never be divorced from compassion. Sheikh Dahiru’s legacy endures through the vast community of scholars he produced, the Qur’anic institutions he nurtured, and his lifelong advocacy for peace, humility, unity and spiritual excellence. His life is a reminder that the measure of true scholarship lies not only in knowledge, but in character—choosing peace over anger, understanding over division, and guidance over bitterness. As we bid farewell to this monumental figure, may Allah grant him eternal rest, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus. Insecurity and School Closures in Northern Nigeria – By Comrade Wali, mni

The recent abductions of schoolgirls in Kebbi, Niger and Borno State, have brought to the forefront the urgent and worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria. Today, we are witnessing the closure of Federal Unity Schools nationwide, while states such as Katsina, Niger, and Plateau have shut their schools. This situation threatens the educational foundation of millions of children. These attacks are not only a security catastrophe; they carry dangerous international implication. The abduction of Christian schoolgirls in Niger State, for example, risk feeding a global narrative especially the U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial comments that Christians are being systematically targeted in Nigeria. This narrative is inaccurate. The truth is that insecurity affects children of all faiths across the North, Muslims and Christians alike and Nigeria must address this challenge collectively. But beyond condemning the criminals, the Northern Nigeria must also confront a difficult reality: we cannot continue depending entirely on Abuja. Other regions have taken their destinies into their own hands — the South-West established Amotekun, the South-East mobilised community security, and the South-South reinforced its local structures. The North must do the same. Northern Nigeria has produced the highest number of retired military generals, ex-police officers, intelligence experts, technocrats, wealthy business leaders, and respected traditional rulers. It is time for these assets to be mobilized. The region must take its destiny into its own hands. Let us stand together — not as Muslims or Christians, not as politicians or tribes — but as people united by a shared destiny. Our children deserve to go to school without fear. Our region deserves peace. And our nation deserves stability. This is the time to act with sincerity, courage, and unity. Dear President Tinubu, Murtala Sule Garo Matters

By Aminu Dahiru Ever since the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the 2023 governorship election in Kano State, a highly contested race, which ended in the court, I have been expecting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to find a space within his cabinet or somewhere else to accommodate the APC deputy governorship candidate of the party in the state in the 2023 election in Kano State, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo. My readers may ask why I am bringing up the issue of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo now and of what significance is this call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political future. I have observed and analyzed the president’s political journey, what some call the political sagacity of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and have come to the conclusion that Tinubu takes grassroots mobilization or movements and their movers seriously. This is one reason which makes the president a political wizard of our time. And by every standard, Murtala Sule Garo is out to add a touch of vitality to the “Renewed Hope Agenda”, which has its roots so deep in service to Nigeria. Being the most populous state and potentially the biggest democracy in Nigeria, Kano remains a strong voting bloc capable of shaping elections. Therefore, identifying and drawing near those who can detect Kano’s political pulse should be one of the president’s prime concerns. He commands hundreds of youth organizations. For years, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo has been in the possession of the string; he moves youth movements in the state at one go. However, this is not for nothing. Garo labored for it and conquered the hearts of youths. Youth and women empowerment, job creation, and commitment to social development top agendas in Alhaji Murtala Sule’s political dictionary. Thick Political Muscles … Arguably, aside from the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje CON, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo is the most prominent and active political figure in the APC in Kano State. The teaming youth and women he commands are evidence of this. From Garo in Kabo Local Government to Gabasawa LG, Dambata to Gaya LG, Commander’s political structure runs across the forty-four local government areas of Kano state; and this political motorcade slews through villages, towns and cities. Youths flow in on a daily basis. For example, the one-million-man campaign march for Tinubu Ganduje led in Kano State prior to the 2023 presidential election, along with many more political mobilizations, owes its success to Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo’s effective mobilization skills. The commander is to Ganduje what “Man Friday” to Robinson Crusoe. Trust, loyalty and capacity bind the two political leaders. Garo is Green… The Tinubu administration needs to pay more attention to and invest more on nurturing youth – youth inclusion. Undoubtedly, the government has appointed youths into key positions. As President Tinubu envisaged it, still youth inclusion is the future of politics in Nigeria and Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo symbolizes healing, health, youth and political fertility. He is someone to whom hundreds of thousands of youths look up to. A source of delight to Kano APC members… In government and out of government this political figure has given a political lifeline to APC members in Kano State. For example, during Ramadan and Sallah festivities, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo donated millions of naira to families, party elders and the APC social media team members. He has clung to this habit of fertilizing the party ever since. It was to calm the nerves of the Commander’s teeming supporters that Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on a podium, told the APC supporters in the state that Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo’s appointment is underway. This did not only put a smile on the faces of the audience, but also rekindled hope. Youth have been yearning to see loyal party members and capacitated political leaders like Commander appointed into key positions; to them this, equates life and/or an ever-lasting commitment to their well-being. Garo and Detractors There are strong allegations that some individuals in key positions are working tirelessly to block Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo from receiving a federal government appointment. They fear that Commander’s rising popularity is eclipsing their perceived failure. But this approach is shortsighted and dangerous. The APC in Kano state urgently needs Garo’s expertise and widespread appeal to unseat the ruling NNPP in 2027. To date, despite his being out of government for a while, Garo is the most acceptable APC member in Kano state, owing to his generosity. Kano 2023 governorship election Despite the apparent challenges which hindered the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano from retaining the governorship seat, the party’s candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, still managed to secure 890,705 votes, representing approximately 45.03% of the total votes, as against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who polled 019,602, approximately 51.55%. Traditionally the people of Kano state tend to grow disenchanted with any government or a political party after every eight years, often opting for change But Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo’s exceptional organisational capacity to mobilization skills played a crucial role in preventing the party from suffering a complete loss. There were perceptions that the Buhari-led Federal Government was determined to politically humiliate former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, thereby complicating the APC position in the state. We all know what happened in court. Garo and Kano by-elections Renowned politicians and political pundits have pointed out that the APC’s loss in Bagwai/Shanono state assembly by election and as well as its narrow escape from defeat in Ghari/Tsanyawa state assembly by-election can largely be attributed to the sidelining of Commander. NNPP Claims Overhyped as Ganduje Strengthens APC’s 2027 Positioning – Analyst

Political analysts in Kano have dismissed claims by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) that the All Progressives Congress (APC) lacks the capacity to win the 2027 elections without the influence of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, describing the assertion as “political exaggeration” aimed at boosting NNPP’s relevance. The reaction follows comments by the Kano NNPP Chairman, Mr. Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, who alleged that the ruling party was “weak and confused” ahead of the next general elections. However, political observer, Umar Idris Shuaibu, said the APC remains the most structured political organisation in Nigeria, currently strengthening its internal cohesion under the guidance of its national leaders, including the immediate past National Chairman and now Chairperson of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Ganduje’s Influence Still Central in APC Analysts maintain that despite NNPP’s claims, Dr. Ganduje continues to command enormous goodwill, deep political networks, and unmatched grassroots influence across Kano and the North West. “Ganduje’s political structure did not collapse in 2023. In fact, it is still the most organised political machinery in Kano. His reach goes beyond party lines,” Umar noted. APC’s National Strength ‘Unshaken’ Despite Opposition Claims Contrary to the NNPP chairman’s position, the analyst said the APC is not in a position of weakness, stressing that political consultations are normal ahead of any election cycle. “Every strong party builds bridges. The APC is not begging for alliances; it is strengthening national unity,” he reiterated. He added that the NNPP’s comments were “an attempt to remain in the news as the party grapples with internal defections and declining influence.” NNPP’s 2023 Performance ‘Overhyped’ — Analyst Umar Idris Shuaibu also dismissed claims about NNPP’s electoral strength in 2023, arguing that the party benefitted largely from protest votes and ballot visibility issues, rather than from solid political structures. “The NNPP’s success was situational, not structural. Their national impact remains minimal, and their strength is still largely confined to pockets of Kano,” he said. Ganduje’s Legacy Projects Still Resonating in Kano The analyst further argued that despite political differences, Dr. Ganduje’s infrastructural interventions and rural development initiatives continue to shape public sentiment positively. Some of the key legacy projects include: Construction of rural roads and bridges Development of the Dansoshiya grazing reserve and Fulani settlement Healthcare upgrades across rural communities Improved water supply systems Workers welfare “These projects remain unmatched and continue to earn him respect across the state,” Umar confirmed it. APC Preparing for 2027 With Renewed Strategy Party insiders confirmed that the APC is intensifying mobilisation efforts to reclaim Kano in 2027, with Dr. Ganduje, federal appointees, and other key stakeholders coordinating support bases across all 44 local government areas. “The 2027 contest will be based on performance, not propaganda,” an APC source said. “The federal government’s interventions in infrastructure, security, and agriculture will reshape voter confidence.” Conclusion While the NNPP attempts to portray the APC as weakened, analysts insist the ruling party is simply entering a fresh phase of strategic reorganisation. With Ganduje’s sustained political relevance, widened federal visibility, and deep-rooted national structures, the APC remains strongly positioned ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Destroyer of Kano’s Commercial Legacy: A Critical Reflection on Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s Utterances

For decades, Kano stood as Northern Nigeria’s unrivaled hub of commerce and an economic powerhouse whose markets, artisans, and trading networks attracted people from across the country and beyond. In recent years, this legacy has come under threat, pointing fingers at political decisions and actions associated with Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his political influence in the state. Although his supporters present him as a reformer, many residents, traders, and observers contend that his political interventions have contributed to an environment of commercial instability especially by reflecting on his utterances during political gatherings, rally and campaigns particularly at the eve of 2023 general election. The utterances made by Sen. Kwankwaso form the basis of a growing narrative that Kwankwaso has, intentionally acted as a destroyer of Kano’s commercial legacy looking at the following consequences of the utterances. One of the most contentious issues raised against Kwankwaso’s utterances is the demolition of shops at Kofar Mata, near the iconic Kwari Market (Kano’s textile nerve centre). These demolitions seemed politically motivated and has led to the abrupt closure of numerous businesses in the nation’s centre of commerce. For many traders, tailors, and wholesalers, the demolished shops were not just commercial spaces but rather lifelong investments and financial backbone of their entire families as well as sources of employment for young people in the city of Kano. This was considered by many as economic sabotage. Several other commercial structures in other strategic areas of Kano such as Kano Golf club (Filin sukuwa) and old Daula Hotel along Hadejia Road were also demolished while other area are still threatened with demolition under political environments linked to Kwankwaso’s sphere of influence. These actions reflect a pattern of disregard for the economic wellbeing of the city, where political rivalry is allowed to overshadow commercial interests and economic development. Although the malicious act of demolition was framed as “recovery of public property” or “urban restructuring,” it causes more harm than good as it leads to loss of capital investments for many traders and investors, destabilization of established commercial clusters, and the weakening of Kano’s position as a resilient trading metropolis. What remains clear to many people within and outside the state is that these decisions appear less like reforms and more like political vendettas with devastating economic loss that will take decades to be recovered. Kano historically thrived because it welcomed traders from across the country such Aba’s textile merchants, Lagos importers, northern livestock dealers, and countless others from within and outside the country who saw Kano as a dependable commercial anchor. The instability created by this politically linked demolitions, threats, and uncertainty has scared away many of these visitors. It is obvious that a market cannot flourish when entrepreneurs fear that their investments, stalls, or business environments could be disrupted without notice. Thus, as commercial confidence weakens, so does patronage. And as patronage declines, Kano’s once-vibrant interstate trade begins to lose its competitive edge. Another recurring criticism is the claim that Kwankwaso’s political movement has, over the years, empowered groups of youths who become active during political seasons and are often referred to by residents as “Yan Tauri” or political thugs. This empowerment fuels disorder, particularly in commercial districts where clashes, intimidation, or street disturbances can disrupt business operations. Markets thrive on stability, safety, and predictability. Any atmosphere of fear, whether politically motivated or opportunistically exploited, pushes traders and customers away, thereby undermining the commercial structure that took generations to build. In conclusion, Kano’s commercial identity is not merely an economic construct but a cultural heritage, a social safety net, and a symbol of Northern prosperity. The criticisms directed at Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso reflect deep anxieties about the city’s future, as many believe his political actions have contributed to disruptions that weaken Kano’s longstanding legacy as a vibrant centre of commerce. Whether one agrees with these accusations or views them as political rhetoric, the truth remains that Kano’s commercial survival depends on stability, inclusiveness, and the protection of economic infrastructure, not its destruction. Green Africa Airline, Not for A Green Coloured Nation “Nigeria”

My flight cancellation experience from Akure to Abuja, on green Africa airlines has become painfully familiar to Nigerian air travelers, you’ve carefully planned your trip, booked days or weeks in advance, arranged meetings or family gatherings, only to receive that dreaded cancellation email, just mere hours before departure. No explanation beyond a vague “operational reasons,” no immediate solution, just a hollow apology that mocks the very real disruption to your life and livelihood. This scenario has become the depressing norm rather than the exception across Nigeria’s aviation sector, with airlines like Green Africa continuing to sell tickets while knowing fully well they cannot fulfill these commitments. My recent situation with Green Africa on Thursday 6th November, examplifies consumer betrayal. After my flight cancellation at noon I had to resort to embark on a ground 6 hours painstakingly journey through the thick and dangerous forest I avoided to arrive at abuja late night. I recall that In March 2025, the airline announced a “temporary suspension” of operations due to “a sudden and unexpected development with aircraft lessor”. Yet, absurdly, their booking portal remained active, collecting payments from unsuspecting citizens including mine, for flights that could not possibly operate. This isn’t just poor service t’s institutional disrespect for Nigerian passengers and a blatant disregard for the basic principles of consumer protection. Its mission statement explicitly commits “to provide aviation safety and economic regulation in the most efficient manner”. The authority outlines clear passenger rights, including compensation for flight cancellations and the requirement that airlines must reimburse the full value of tickets for domestic flights delayed beyond three hours. As it stands not a single staff could explain to me on genuine reason let alone the refund of the air fare, the airline stand at the Nnamdi Azikwe international airport is without any staff as of Friday morning so also their office. The NCAA has demonstrated it can take strong action when motivated. I recall that in May 2025, the authority sanctioned Kenya Airways for consumer protection violations, giving them seven days to “pay refunds and compensation totalling 1000 special drawing rights to the affected passengers”. This establishes a huge precedent, if foreign carriers can be held accountable, why are domestic airlines permitted to violate regulations with such impunity? While Green Africa’s current crisis highlights the problem, the issue runs much deeper than one airline. The entire sector suffers from structural deficiencies that regularly manifest as; · Inadequate fleet capacity relative to passenger demand, especially during peak seasons · Poor inter-airline coordination that prevents alternative arrangements for stranded passengers · Operational inefficiencies exacerbated by fuel scarcity and maintenance issues · Weather challenges like harmattan dust haze that the system is unprepared to manage The solution lies not in endless warnings but in meaningful regulatory action. The NCAA should immediately: 1. Suspend the operational licenses of airlines that demonstrably lack the capacity to fulfill their scheduled services, particularly that of Green Africa airlines that have openly admitted they “will not be able to operate” while continuing to sell tickets. 2. Establish clear capacity thresholds that tie an airline’s permitted schedule to its actual available aircraft, with severe penalties for over-scheduling. 3. Mandate financial escrow arrangements to ensure immediate compensation for cancelled flights, moving beyond theoretical rights to guaranteed remedies. 4. Create a public accountability dashboard showing real-time airline performance metrics, including cancellation rates by carrier. The solution requires a fundamental rethinking of Nigeria’s aviation licensing model. Rather than treating operational licenses as permanent entitlements, they should be performance-based privileges subject to regular review based on operational reliability, financial health and consumer complaint resolution. In a matter of urgency and concrete solutions, the NCAA is been called upon to immediately consider the following; · Mandatory interline agreements between carriers to protect passengers when cancellations occur · Strict fleet-to-schedule ratios that prevent overcommitment · Digital refund systems to ensure the NCAA’s mandated 14-day refund window becomes reality rather than aspiration The continuing operation of chronically unreliable airlines like the Green Africa airline represents a fundamental market failure in Nigerian aviation. It perpetuates a culture of consumer exploitation where citizens pay for services they may never receive and are left with minimal recourse when betrayed. The NCAA must find the courage to use its extensive regulatory powers on green Africa airline and similar others to protect the Nigerian flying public. This means temporarily revoking the licenses of any airline that cannot fulfill their basic operational commitments, requiring them to demonstrate genuine capacity before being permitted to resume ticket sales. Until the authority takes such decisive action, the cycle of disappointment will continue. Nigerian air passengers deserve more than apologies, they deserve reliable air services and meaningful compensation when services fail. A gesture of kindness, a heart of gold, bringing happiness to stories untold. Their patience wears a gentle face as they await a brighter place — a leader’s touch, a people’s cheer, a moment’s joy that wipes away decades of pain. In Governor Yusuf’s heart, they place their trust, their hopes, their quiet space — a people-focused heart that beats with care. It’s true that happiness is contagious and when you share, it surely comes back to you. Governor Yusuf’s heart is gold — 4,000 families, stories told, BESDA teachers, joy abounds, happiness shared with happy sounds. Not too many in numbers, casual media workers, the unsung heroes. A society’s pulse in their skilled hands, a glimpse of truth they bravely provide. In Kano State, a story’s spun — of hope and promise for everyone. Governor Yusuf’s name, in hearts is kept.
