One such figure in Kano State is Engr. Abba Ganduje, whose development activities and grassroots engagements have kept him within the political conversation across Dawakin Tofa Federal Constituency, which comprises Dawakin Tofa, Tofa and Rimin Gado Local Government Areas. Although he did not secure victory in the 2023 House of Representatives election, many observers say his continued involvement in community development initiatives has ensured that his political relevance remains firmly intact within the constituency. Federal Role with Grassroots Impact A major turning point in his public career came on March 7, 2024, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him as Executive Director (Technical Services) of the Rural Electrification Agency. Solar Projects and Rural Infrastructure One of the most visible interventions associated with Engr. Abba Ganduje has been the distribution and installation of solar-powered street lights across communities within the constituency. More than 1,130 solar street lights have been installed across 38 wards in Rimin Gado and Tofa Local Government Areas, helping improve security and nighttime economic activities. The intervention followed an earlier phase that included the installation of 810 solar street lights, alongside the provision of a transformer in Dawanau Ward and the distribution of solar home systems to young entrepreneurs. Residents say such projects have helped reduce reliance on fuel generators while improving access to electricity for small businesses and households. Economic Empowerment for Youths and Farmers Beyond infrastructure development, empowerment programmes have also featured prominently in his outreach to the constituency. These initiatives have included the distribution of motorcycles, sewing machines, fertilizers, irrigation pumps and food items to beneficiaries across several communities. In one of the programmes, 120 young farmers received solar-powered irrigation pumps, enabling them to cultivate crops beyond the traditional rainy season. Similarly, 160 small and medium enterprises were provided with solar energy systems, allowing them to operate more sustainably and reduce operational costs. Observers say such interventions have contributed to strengthening small-scale economic activity within rural communities. Education and Social Support Education and social welfare have also featured within his community-based initiatives. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds have received financial assistance, while learning materials have been distributed to schools in rural communities. Other interventions have included healthcare outreach and support for community infrastructure projects aimed at improving local living conditions. Supporters argue that such programmes demonstrate a continued commitment to addressing everyday challenges facing communities across the constituency. Political Legacy Engr. Abba Ganduje’s public life is also shaped by a long-standing political background. His father, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, remains one of the most prominent political figures in Kano State. His political journey began with public service Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and as a Commissioner before rising to the position of Deputy Governor for two terms and later Governor of Kano State for another two terms. He also served as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Political analysts say this background has contributed to Engr. Abba Ganduje’s visibility in both political and developmental circles. Beyond the 2023 Electoral Setback In the 2023 general election, Engr. Abba Ganduje contested the House of Representatives seat for Dawakin Tofa Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress. However, the seat was won by Hon. Tijjani Abdulkadir Jobe of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Despite the defeat, he remained actively engaged with communities across the constituency through development initiatives and empowerment programmes. For supporters, this sustained presence demonstrates resilience and continued commitment to the welfare of the people.
