Kano Assembly Passes Economic Council Bill, Pushes Computer Science in Schools, Receives Judicial Service Nominees

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking the establishment of the Kano State Economic Council, in a move aimed at strengthening economic planning, coordination and development across the state.

The bill was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Jibril Falgore, following deliberations by lawmakers.

Speaking with journalists after the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House and member representing Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini, said the proposed council would provide a coordinated framework for driving economic development across the state.

Hussaini said the bill empowers the governor to serve as chairman of the council, which would also comprise the commissioners responsible for Budget and Planning, Economic Development, Justice and Education.

He added that five eminent persons with relevant expertise would be appointed to contribute to the council’s efforts to advance the state’s economic development.

According to him, the council would be responsible for developing programmes and strategies for the economic advancement of Kano, while coordinating the activities of the state government and the 44 local government councils towards achieving sustainable economic growth.

The Majority Leader said the chairmen of the local government councils would also be members of the council, while the ministry responsible for local government affairs would serve as its secretariat.

Assembly wants Computer Science made core subject
Meanwhile, the Assembly has adopted a motion calling on the Kano State Government to provide adequate equipment and facilities for the teaching of computer science and make the subject a core component of the curriculum at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

The motion was sponsored by the member representing Gharin Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Ya’u Gwarmwi.

Moving the motion, Gwarmwi said computer science had become indispensable to modern development, with applications across critical sectors including healthcare, agriculture, education and the economy.

He expressed concern that inadequate computer literacy was affecting the performance of some students in examinations, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

The lawmaker argued that making computer science a core subject would give students the basic digital skills required to navigate examinations and compete effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The motion received the backing of other lawmakers, who described computer literacy as essential to improving the quality of education and preparing young people for emerging opportunities.

Assembly receives nominees for Judicial Service Commission
In another development, the Assembly received correspondence from the executive seeking its approval for the appointment of Uwa Bello Makama and Auwal Ibrahim as members of the Kano State Judicial Service Commission.

The nominees are expected to undergo the necessary legislative process before the House takes a decision on the request.
