The Kano State Police Command has received 30 newly posted Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) deployed from the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD. Receiving the officers at the command headquarters, CP Bakori congratulated them on the successful completion of their training and formal passing out from the academy, describing their deployment as a call to service and responsibility. The commissioner charged the officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline in the discharge of their duties, while serving as good ambassadors of the Nigeria Police Force in their various postings across the state. He further urged them to remain committed to protecting and promoting human rights, stressing that their conduct must reflect the core values of the force, including integrity, professionalism, and service to humanity. The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the deployment of the newly promoted Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, alongside 17 Commissioners of Police, to strategic departments, commands, and formations across the country. The redeployment is aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, enhancing leadership effectiveness, improving public safety, and ensuring efficient service delivery nationwide. Under the new postings, DIG Gumel has been assigned to head the Force Intelligence Department, a key unit responsible for intelligence gathering and coordination within the police system. Gombe Tightens Security, Shuts Down Scrap Metal Business

The Gombe State Government has imposed an immediate ban on the scrap metal business, popularly known as Bola Jari, citing serious security risks linked to the trade. The decision was announced on Monday by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Zubair Muhammad Umar, following an expanded meeting of the State Security Council chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. Umar said the council approved the ban after a thorough assessment of security reports indicating a rise in vandalism of public infrastructure and other criminal activities associated with scrap metal trading in the state. According to him, the meeting was convened to review emerging security challenges, during which the council adopted far-reaching security measures aimed at strengthening public safety and enhancing internal security across Gombe State. He noted that the council expressed deep concern over the persistent vandalisation of school facilities and other public assets, many of which were allegedly sold to scrap metal dealers. He said the White Paper followed the report of an earlier committee chaired by a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zubairu Muazu, which reviewed the status of grazing reserves and cattle routes across the state. Umar stressed that the measures were designed to promote peaceful coexistence, strengthen internal security, and enhance grassroots intelligence gathering. Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, Umar Ahmad Chuso, said security agencies had intensified operations following recent incidents of abductions and killings in Pindiga, Akko Local Government Area. Describing the incidents as unfortunate, the police commissioner assured residents that concerted efforts were ongoing to rescue abducted victims, apprehend those responsible, and prevent a recurrence.

The Nigerian Army has announced the commencement of applications for the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) Course 29/2026, inviting qualified Nigerians to apply for commission as officers. In a statement issued by the Army, the DSSC programme is open to both civilians and serving military personnel who meet the stipulated requirements. Successful candidates will be commissioned into selected professional corps of the Nigerian Army. The corps available for the current intake include the Nigerian Army Engineers, Nigerian Army Signals, Nigerian Army Medical Corps, Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and the Nigerian Army Education Corps. Tinubu Nominates Magnus Abe as NUPRC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has nominated former Senator representing Rivers South-East, Magnus Abe, as chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and forwarded his name alongside 20 others to the Senate for confirmation. In separate letters sent to the upper chamber on Monday, the President sought expedited approval for nominees to serve on the boards of the NUPRC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Abe, a two-term senator, previously served on the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and currently chairs the National Agency of the Great Green Wall. According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Abe is to lead the NUPRC board alongside non-executive commissioners including Paul Jezhi, a former chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Kaduna State, and Sunday Babalola, a former deputy director of the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR). Seven executive commissioners were also nominated to the NUPRC board. They include Muhammed Lamido as executive commissioner for finance; Edu Inyang for exploration and acreage management; Justin Ezeala for economic regulation and strategic planning; and Henry Oki for development and production. For the NMDPRA board, President Tinubu nominated Adegbite Adeniji, a legal practitioner with over three decades of experience in energy and natural resources, as chairman. Adeniji previously served as special technical adviser to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources on upstream and gas matters until 2018. He was also part of the World Bank Oil and Gas Policy team that advised Nigeria on petroleum sector reforms, including the Strategic Gas Plan, and is currently the managing partner at ENR Advisory. Other nominees for the NMDPRA board include former Minister of State for Trade, Kenneth Kobani, and Asabe Ahmed as non-executive members. The executive directors nominated for the authority are Abiodun Adeniji for finance; Francis Ogaree for hydrocarbon processing; Oluwole Adama for midstream and downstream gas infrastructure; and Dr Mustapha Lamorde for corporate services and administration. Additional nominees include Yahaya Yinusa as executive director for distribution systems; Adeyemi Aminu for corporate services; Modie Ogechukwu for economic regulation and strategic planning; and Olawale Dawodu as board secretary and legal adviser. President Tinubu appointed Adama in 2024, while the late President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Lamorde and Adeniji in 2021 and Ogaree in 2022. Dawodu previously served as financial reporting manager at ExxonMobil Nigerian subsidiaries. The nominations follow the recent confirmation by the Senate of Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as Chief Executive Officer of the NUPRC and Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as Chief Executive Officer of the NMDPRA. Both regulatory agencies were established under the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021, which dismantled the former Department of Petroleum Resources and restructured governance in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. Wike Warns APC National Secretary Against Interfering in Rivers Affairs

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, cautioning him against meddling in the political affairs of Rivers State. In a video circulating online, Wike, while addressing supporters at a rally in Oyigbo, Rivers State, accused Basiru of interfering in matters that do not concern him. “Let me tell the National Secretary of the APC, leave Rivers State alone. Because you have heard that N600 billion is in Rivers, you are putting your mouth into what does not concern you,” Wike said. “You are enjoying in Osun State, but you do not know the people that worked for it to be so.” The former Rivers State governor warned against taking the state’s political support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granted, stressing that careless statements could have serious consequences. The development follows earlier comments by Senator Basiru, who criticised an APC official for referring to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as a “so-called governor.” Basiru warned that such language undermines democratic institutions and disrespects the dignity of elected offices. The APC official accused of making the remark was identified as Victor Giadom, the party’s Vice Chairman (South-South), who reportedly made the statement at Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State. “I find it unfortunate that a member of the NWC was referring to a governor in our party as a ‘so-called governor of Rivers State’,” Basiru wrote on Facebook. “The office of the governor is an exalted position, and whoever occupies it must be respected, irrespective of political differences.” Basiru had previously led members of the APC National Executive Committee to Port Harcourt, where they publicly endorsed Governor Fubara for a second term. However, Wike has consistently vowed to block Fubara’s second-term ambition, signalling continued political tension within the Rivers State political landscape.
