The Kano State Online Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of two serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Sa’ad Ungoggo and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji. The late lawmakers represented Ungoggo and Kano Municipal constituencies respectively and passed away on Wednesday evening after a protracted illness. In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday, the Chapel described their deaths as a painful loss that has cast a dark shadow over Kano State and beyond, noting that the state has lost committed legislators whose voices and dedication to public service contributed significantly to governance and representation. Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulƙadir Ɗangambo, said the demise of the two lawmakers has deprived Kano of experienced and passionate public servants, creating a vacuum in the legislative arm that would be difficult to fill. A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Ungoggo Local Government Area, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, has died in Kano. The death of the lawmaker was confirmed on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaludeen Sani Shawai, in a statement to journalists. According to Shawai, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungoggo developed a sudden illness shortly after arriving at the Assembly earlier in the day. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where medical personnel later confirmed his death. The late lawmaker was said to have passed away in the evening. Former Governor of Kano State and National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has urged the Kano State Police Command to withdraw security operatives deployed to the Nasarawa Palace, where the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, is currently residing. Kwankwaso made the call on Monday while speaking at the official launch of the Kano State Government-owned Neighbourhood Watch Corps held in Kano. The former governor and ex-Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District maintained that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the only legitimate Emir of Kano, warning that the creation or sustenance of parallel traditional institutions could undermine peace and stability in the state. According to him, the use of security personnel to impose or sustain an emir not recognised by law is unacceptable and capable of escalating tension within Kano. The Kano State Government has launched the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps as part of efforts to strengthen security at the grassroots level and enhance the protection of lives and property across the state. The corps, made up of 2,000 personnel, was inaugurated at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf presiding over the ceremony alongside heads of security agencies operating in the state. ‘The Historica Nigeria‘ reports that the Neighbourhood Watch Corps was established to complement the operations of conventional security agencies through improved surveillance, intelligence gathering and community-based security interventions. Members of the corps, largely drawn from youths across the state, have undergone training in basic security operations, early warning mechanisms and collaboration with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to prevent crime and maintain public order. Eminent Nigerians have described retired Supreme Court Judge, Hon. The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, has concluded comprehensive security arrangements for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, assuring residents of adequate security across the state. This was conveyed in a statement signed and issued today by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, ANIPR, MNISMA, FNACSP, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, and made available to ‘The Historica Nigeria’. According to the statement, the security measures are in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, mandating all police commands nationwide to deploy sufficient personnel and operational assets to ensure a safe, peaceful and crime-free festive period. The statement disclosed that CP Bakori, on Monday, December 22, 2025, met with operational commanders, including Heads of Departments, Area, Squadron and Tactical Commanders, as well as Divisional Police Officers, where he ordered intensified patrols, visibility policing, intelligence-led operations and confidence-building engagements throughout the festive season. It added that the Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has put in place robust security arrangements to safeguard lives and property before, during and after the celebrations. The police cautioned against reckless driving, car racing and over-speeding, noting that underaged children and unlicensed persons are prohibited from operating vehicles, tricycles or motorcycles. Unauthorized horse riding and the use of fireworks were also declared strictly prohibited. Parents and guardians were advised to closely monitor and accompany their children when going out to prevent cases of missing children, accidents or unsolicited engagements, while individuals and groups were warned to desist from any act capable of breaching public peace or disrupting law and order.
