Kano Assembly Reintroduces Electricity Bill to Establish State Power Agency

The Kano State House of Assembly has reintroduced the Kano State Electricity Bill, 2026, seeking to establish a state electricity agency to regulate the electricity sector and promote independent power generation and distribution across the state.

The bill was considered during the Committee of the Whole at plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore.

Briefing journalists after the sitting, the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Hussaini, said the proposed legislation, once assented to by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, would provide the legal framework for the establishment of the Kano State Electricity Agency.

According to him, the agency will be headed by a Managing Director and governed by a council whose members will serve a renewable three-year tenure.

He explained that the proposed law is designed to create an enabling environment for both local and foreign investors to participate in electricity generation, transmission and distribution, with the aim of improving power supply and stimulating economic growth in Kano State.

Hussaini noted that the establishment of the agency would also strengthen the state’s regulatory capacity and encourage investment in the electricity sector following recent constitutional and policy reforms that allow states to play a greater role in electricity regulation.

Meanwhile, the House also adopted a motion of urgent public importance over the persistent vandalisation of electricity infrastructure in Madobi Local Government Area.

The motion, sponsored by the member representing Madobi Constituency, Mukhtar Ishaq, expressed concern over the destruction of electrical cables and other power facilities, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The lawmaker called on the Kano State Government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute individuals involved in vandalising electricity infrastructure across the state.

Following deliberations, the House referred the motion to its Standing Committee on Electricity for further investigation and directed the committee to submit its report within one month.
