Kano Assembly Passes Bill to Establish State Police
The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the establishment of state police.
The bill was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore, following deliberations on its 26 clauses at the Committee of the Whole House.
The Speaker said the bill was considered and passed in accordance with the powers conferred on the Assembly under Section 9(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

The proposed amendment seeks to establish a legal framework for the creation of a state police service and address related matters.
The development marks a step in Kano State’s legislative consideration of state policing, an issue that has featured prominently in national discussions on security and the need to strengthen responses to crime and other security challenges.
However, the establishment of state police through constitutional amendment requires the completion of the constitutionally prescribed amendment process involving the National Assembly and the required number of state Houses of Assembly.
The passage of the bill by the Kano Assembly does not, by itself, establish a state police service, as the proposed constitutional amendment must receive the necessary approvals before it can take effect.
