Northwest Governors Declare July 15 Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari
The Northwest Governors Forum has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday across all seven states in the region in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in the United Kingdom on Sunday.
The announcement was made in a statement personally signed by the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, on Monday.

Governor Radda expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Buhari as “our father, our leader, and the pride of the Northwest region.”
“On behalf of the Northwest Governors Forum and the entire people of the Northwest region, I extend our heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the immediate family of the late President, the Government and people of Katsina State, and indeed all Nigerians who mourn this irreplaceable loss,” the statement read.
He described the late leader as a man of “service, integrity, and sacrifice,” whose legacy of discipline and patriotism transcended regional lines and defined national leadership.
“In recognition of his immense contributions to the region and the nation, the Northwest Governors Forum has unanimously agreed to declare Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday in all Northwest states. This is a mark of honour and respect for our departed elder statesman,” Governor Radda announced.
He also confirmed that the remains of President Buhari would arrive in Katsina on Tuesday by 12:00 p.m., with the burial ceremony to follow at 2:00 p.m. in his hometown of Daura.
Governor Radda called on Nigerians to pray for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul and strength for his family and the nation to bear the loss.
“May Allah (SWT) grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and give his family, friends, and all Nigerians the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term civilian President from 2015 to 2023. His death has triggered widespread mourning and tributes across Nigeria and beyond.
