In a bold move to ensure Kano State’s interests are effectively represented in the ongoing constitutional amendment process initiated by the National Assembly, the Kano State Government has inaugurated a 26-member high-powered committee tasked with articulating the state’s official position.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Cabinet Office in Kano and was presided over by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouq Ibrahim, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Speaking at the event, the SSG explained that the committee comprises distinguished professionals, respected academics, and national thought leaders with deep experience in governance, law, and public policy.

The committee is chaired by renowned constitutional lawyer, Professor Auwalu Yadudu, with Professor Hafiz Abubakar, MFR, serving as Co-Chairman.

To support the committee’s work, a dedicated secretariat has been established, led by Umar Muhammad Jalo, Permanent Secretary at the Cabinet Office. He will be assisted by Abdulkadir Shehu, Ibrahim Bawa, and Aminu Ibrahim Bichi as Co-Secretaries.
The committee has been charged with the responsibility of carefully reviewing the proposed constitutional amendments and identifying critical areas of interest to Kano State. These include:

Farouq emphasized the importance of extensive public engagement in the process, encouraging the committee to consult widely and gather input from various stakeholders. He also commended the committee’s plan to utilize media platforms to raise awareness and promote inclusive dialogue across the state.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Chairman, Professor Habu Muhammad conveyed Prof. Yadudu’s appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the confidence placed in the committee. He assured the public of a diligent and transparent process and called on citizens to support the committee through active participation and prayers.
The work of the committee is expected to significantly influence Kano State’s legislative position in the national constitutional review and align it with the aspirations and priorities of its citizens. The state hopes to play a leading role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s federal structure through this initiative.
