KASU ASUU suspends strike over agreement, nine-month arrears

The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, following the Kaduna State Government’s approval of the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement at the institution.

The union also cited approval by the KASU Governing Council and Management for the commencement of payment of nine-month salary arrears covering January to September 2026.

The decision was contained in a statement jointly signed by the KASU-ASUU Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Thursday night.

The union said its congress met on Thursday, September 17, 2026, to deliberate on the approvals granted by the state government and the university authorities and unanimously resolved to accept the offers.

“Based on the conditions mentioned above, they resolved to suspend the ongoing strike action in the branch, effective 12.01 am, 18th September, 2026,” the statement said.

ASUU-KASU expressed appreciation to Governor Uba Sani for approving the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement at the university.

The union said the decision demonstrated the governor’s commitment to staff welfare and the continued development of KASU.

“We believe that this significant gesture, among other initiatives, demonstrates your commitment to ensuring that KASU remains one of the leading universities in Nigeria, particularly in the area of staff welfare,” it said.

The union also commended members of the Government Negotiation Team for their dedication, commitment and prompt attention to the issues under consideration.

It equally appreciated the management of KASU for providing information, documents and support to both the Government Negotiation Team and the ASUU-KASU Team, which it said contributed to resolving the dispute.

The union further praised the state government and university management for the patience, restraint and understanding demonstrated throughout the strike.

According to ASUU-KASU, neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation during the dispute.

“This represents a significant departure from experiences in the past. The Union was allowed to exhaust its established internal procedures in both commencing and suspending the strike action,” the statement said.

The union described the approach as a positive demonstration of respect for due process, constructive engagement and industrial relations.

With the suspension taking effect from 12.01 am on Friday, academic activities at Kaduna State University are expected to resume.
