First Lady Honours Qur’anic Competition Winner, Awards Her N20m

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commended Maryam Ibrahim Dan’Azumi for winning the women’s category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The First Lady gave the commendation on Tuesday in Abuja, where she honoured the Gombe State-born Qur’anic scholar and presented her with a cash award of N20 million.

Dan’Azumi was accompanied to the event by her father, Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya and other members of the state government.

Tinubu described Maryam’s accomplishment as a source of pride to Nigeria and an inspiration to the girl child, commending her parents for supporting her education and nurturing her talent.

She said the achievement was not only a personal triumph but also a source of national pride, noting that Maryam had placed Nigeria prominently on the global stage through her mastery of the Holy Qur’an.

The First Lady also recalled the achievement of Maryam’s elder sister, Hajara, who won a similar international Qur’anic competition in Jordan in 2024.

She described the sisters as inspiring examples for young Nigerians and commended their parents, teachers and mentors, as well as Governor Yahaya, for their support and mentorship.

“Maryam’s achievement shows the value of hard work, discipline and dedication,” Tinubu said.

She urged the young Qur’anic scholar to embrace mentorship as she advances in her education, stressing that education remained a key priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to her, the administration is committed to promoting inclusive education and creating opportunities for young Nigerians to develop their talents.

The First Lady also expressed her willingness to support Dan’Azumi in pursuing a postgraduate degree.

Earlier, Governor Yahaya said Gombe State was not deficient in education, describing Dan’Azumi’s accomplishment as a source of pride to the state and Nigeria.

He noted that the young scholar had progressed through local and national Qur’anic competitions before qualifying for the international contest in Saudi Arabia.

Responding, Dan’Azumi thanked the First Lady for the honour and recognition, saying her participation in the Saudi Arabian competition provided her with valuable global exposure.

She expressed hope that her achievement would inspire other young Nigerians to work harder and strive for excellence.

Dan’Azumi also expressed her appreciation to the First Lady and joyfully presented her award to her.

She urged young Nigerians to invest in developing themselves mentally and physically, stressing the importance of self-development and dedication.
