Kano loses political veteran Sani Lawan Kofar Mata at 73
Kano has lost a veteran politician and former Director-General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Sani Lawan Kofar Mata, who died at the age of 73 after an illness.
His close aide and political associate, Malam Auwalu Hotoro, who served as Vice Chairman of Tarauni Local Government during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, confirmed the death to The Historica Nigeria.
Hotoro said Kofar Mata died in Kano.
According to him, the burial is scheduled to take place in Kano on Monday, September 21, 2026. However, the family is yet to announce the venue for the Janazah prayer.

Kofar Mata served for several years as Director-General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau.
He was also a member of the then-defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), from which he left in 2011 alongside other senior members of the party.
He subsequently joined the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), as part of his continued involvement in Kano’s political affairs.
