Kano launches 2026–2030 rural development plan at state summit

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating sustainable rural and community development through stronger partnerships with development partners, the private sector, traditional institutions and local communities.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, stated this on Tuesday during the Kano State Rural and Sustainable Community Development Summit (RUSCODS 2026) held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

Speaking on the theme, “The Pathway for Partnership Towards Sustainable Rural and Community Development in Kano State,” Garo said the prosperity of Kano is closely tied to the strength and productivity of its rural communities, where agriculture, commerce and small-scale businesses remain the primary sources of livelihood.

According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Deputy Governor’s Office, Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu, the Deputy Governor stressed that the present administration is determined to ensure that no community is left behind in the state’s development agenda.

He noted that while government remains committed to improving the living conditions of rural dwellers, achieving sustainable development requires collective action.

“Government alone cannot deliver sustainable development. Addressing the challenges facing our rural communities requires stronger collaboration among government, development partners, financial institutions, civil society organisations, traditional institutions and the communities themselves,” Garo said.

He highlighted the administration’s ongoing investments in rural roads, portable water supply, rural electrification, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment and climate-smart initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities across Kano State.

The Deputy Governor also called on development partners, private sector organisations and community leaders to align their interventions with the actual needs of rural communities.

He urged participants at the summit to provide practical recommendations that would strengthen the implementation of rural development programmes.

“We shall continue to welcome every genuine partnership that contributes to the welfare of our people and the progress of our state,” he added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, disclosed that the Kano State Integrated Rural and Sustainable Community Development Plan (2026–2030) was developed to transform rural communities through a comprehensive five-year development framework.

He explained that the plan places rural communities at the centre of development planning and is built on community-driven and data-based evidence to ensure that projects, policies and investments address the real needs of the people while promoting transparency, accountability and measurable results.

Also speaking, the Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad Maharaz, who represented the Emirs of Kano, Rano and Gaya, described the summit as an important platform for stakeholders to reflect on the challenges facing rural communities and develop practical solutions for sustainable development.

He stressed the need to combine both traditional and modern approaches in accelerating rural development to achieve lasting improvements in the living standards of rural residents.

The summit featured the official unveiling of the Kano State Integrated Rural and Sustainable Community Development Plan (2026–2030), alongside the presentation of awards and certificates of honour to distinguished individuals and organisations for their contributions to rural and community development.
