Starting as a reporter, Garba progressively rose through the newsroom hierarchy, serving as Sub-Editor, Chief Sub-Editor, Group News Editor, and eventually Deputy Editor. His involvement in union activities began as Chairman of the Triumph Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), where he championed issues affecting media practitioners. His dedication and leadership qualities soon propelled him to national prominence within the union movement.

As President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Garba became one of the leading voices for press freedom, ethical journalism, and improved working conditions for journalists across the country.

Crossing into public service
Following a distinguished career in journalism and union leadership, Garba transitioned into public service, bringing with him extensive experience in communication, administration, and stakeholder management.

He first served as Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives before later becoming Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State.

These strategic appointments exposed him to the workings of government and public administration, allowing him to apply his communication expertise in promoting effective governance and public engagement.
