Kano renames health facility to honour community development icon

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the renaming of Dawakin Tofa General Hospital as Dr. Mahmoud Baffa Yola General Hospital in honour of the late elder statesman’s contributions to community development and public service in the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Monday.

Governor Yusuf said the decision was taken to immortalise the late Dr. Mahmoud Baffa Yola, a seasoned politician and administrator who served Kano State in various capacities and contributed significantly to the growth of public service.

He noted that the late statesman was among the pioneers of adult education in Kano State, a programme that expanded access to learning opportunities for thousands of citizens and was later sustained by successive administrations.

The governor also recalled that in 1989, Mahmoud Baffa Yola initiated a community fund-raising effort that led to the establishment of the hospital in his home community of Dawakin Tofa, describing the gesture as a defining example of grassroots development leadership.

Governor Yusuf described the late Yola as a patriotic leader whose legacy of selfless service continues to inspire generations.

He further directed the Ministry of Health to immediately commence the implementation of the already approved renovation of the hospital and to assess the equipment needs of the facility in order to enhance healthcare service delivery.

The governor explained that the hospital serves residents of Dawakin Tofa, Rimingado, Tofa, Bagwai and surrounding local government areas, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the state.

The renaming of the facility, according to the government, is part of ongoing efforts to honour individuals who contributed meaningfully to the development of Kano State while improving public service delivery.
