As the 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy 2025 concluded in Kano, Governor’s College emerged as the overall winner, earning the right to represent Kano State at the forthcoming North West National Quiz Competition. This was contained in a statement issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam. According to Ibrahim Adam, the competition, organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the supervision of the National Assembly, Abuja, is aimed at deepening the knowledge of Nigeria’s youth about the role of the legislative arm in promoting democracy. The competition featured six secondary schools drawn from across the state’s three senatorial zones. The participating schools included Governor’s College, Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila, and Government Secondary School Rano. Declaring the event open at the Kano State Library Board, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi, represented by the Assistant Chief Legislative Officer, Umar Abdulganiyu, emphasized that the House is committed to supporting programmes that enlighten students about legislative activities. In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, commended the National Assembly for prioritizing civic education, noting that the quiz was not just a competition but a platform for celebrating knowledge and nurturing future leaders. Speaking also, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Library Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai, expressed gratitude to the State and National Assembly for partnering with NILDS to host the event. Announcing the results, the Director General of NILDS, Professor Abubakar O. Suleiman, represented by the Programme State Coordinator, Aliyu Abdullahi, declared Governor’s College as first, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo as second, and Government Secondary School Rano as third. Professor Suleiman recalled that the first edition of the quiz was held in 2016 within the Federal Capital Territory, and following directives of the Institute’s Governing Council, it has since been expanded to all states of the federation, with this year marking its 10th edition. Certificates of attendance were presented to participating schools, while winners received prizes. The statement further highlighted that Governor’s College was originally established during the second tenure of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in 2011, but its fortunes dwindled over time until Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, upon assumption of office in 2023, revived its infrastructure and restored its glory, leading to this current success. Governor Yusuf also appreciated the people of Kano for their continued support, reiterating his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education and delivering on campaign promises.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has forwarded the names of two nominees to the State House of Assembly for confirmation as commissioners and members of the state executive council. The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, announced the nominations in a statement issued on Saturday. One of the nominees is Barrister Abdulkarim Kabir Maude, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) designate from Minjibir Local Government Area, who is set to be officially conferred with the prestigious rank at the Supreme Court tomorrow. He previously headed the Kano office of a leading Nigerian law firm and is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association as well as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He also holds advanced degrees in International Economic Law from Maryam Abacha American University of Niger and in Business Commercial Law from Bayero University, Kano. Also nominated is Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, 41, an Associate Professor of Allied Mathematics and Statistician-General of the Kano State Bureau of Statistics. A product of the Kwankwasiyya foreign scholarship scheme, Dr. Aliyu obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Firat University in Turkey, after earlier degrees from Bayero University, Kano, and the Jordan University of Science and Technology. His academic career spans institutions in Nigeria, China, and Cyprus, including a postdoctoral fellowship at Sun Yat-Sen University in China. He also served as the Financial Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State before joining public service. In a separate development, Governor Yusuf approved the appointment of Barrister Salisu Muhammad Tahir as Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice. Until his new role, Tahir was the Director of Public Prosecution at the ministry. The Head of Service has been directed to complete all administrative processes to enable Barrister Tahir assume duty by Monday, September 29, 2025. Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence as the “Best Supportive Governor in Grassroots Information Development and Effective Governance” by the Association of Local Government Information Officers in Nigeria. This was disclosed in a statement signed by Idris Zakariya’u, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, who said the award was presented during the association’s annual national conference in Abuja on September 24, 2025. He added that beyond the information sector, the governor’s achievements in infrastructure, civil service welfare, and people-oriented programmes have set his government apart. Receiving the award on behalf of the governor, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, thanked the association and described the recognition as merit-based and free of sentiment.

The Kano State Civil Service Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, growth, and efficiency in the state workforce following its monthly sitting held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. This was conveyed in a statement signed by Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, Director of Public Enlightenment, who noted that the decisions reflect the broader commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to reposition the civil service as the engine room of governance and development, ensuring that the state workforce remains vibrant, motivated, and disciplined. At the meeting, the Commission deliberated extensively on cases of promotion, conversion, transfer, and discipline, taking decisions aimed at safeguarding the integrity and smooth functioning of the state civil service. In addition, 18 cases of conversion and change of cadre were considered, allowing officers with relevant qualifications and skills to be reassigned into positions better suited to their expertise. The Commission also treated 57 transfer of service cases and one disciplinary matter. All cases were carefully reviewed in line with established civil service rules, and appropriate action was taken. Chairperson of the Commission, Hajiya Ladidi Ibrahim Garko, said the sittings are designed to ensure timely attention to the career progression of civil servants and to prevent stagnation in the system. She stressed that the Commission’s guiding principles remain fairness, transparency, and meritocracy. She further urged affected officers to view their promotions, conversions, or transfers as opportunities for greater responsibility, reminding them that the government and people of Kano State expect renewed dedication, efficiency, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties. “The Commission has a dual role of rewarding excellence and enforcing discipline, because a strong civil service must rest on both pillars,” Garko stated. She assured that the Commission would continue to work closely with the state government to drive reforms that modernize the civil service and improve public service delivery.
