The Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), Kano Office, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, on Monday conducted an official inspection visit to the Drugs Management and Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) central warehouse in Kano. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Agency, Farouk Isa Musa, and made available to newsmen in Kano. The statement noted that the visit was aimed at assessing critical working tools and equipment warehoused at the agency for use in the registration of births across the 44 local government areas of the state. The materials, which are essential to strengthening civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, are being stored and managed by the DMCSA in collaboration with the NPC. Gali Sule, commended the strong partnership between the agency and the National Population Commission. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring efficient warehousing services that support data-driven governance and public health planning. “The accurate registration of births is a cornerstone of effective planning, health service delivery, and social development,” Pharm. Sule stated. “We are honored to support the NPC in this mission by ensuring these tools are securely stored and ready for timely deployment across the state.” He further assured the Commissioner of the security and optimal storage conditions of the materials. In his remarks, Dr. Tsanyawa expressed satisfaction with the standard of storage and management of the items, describing the collaboration between NPC and DMCSA as a model for inter-agency cooperation in strengthening civil registration systems. “I am impressed with the professionalism of DMCSA in handling these vital materials,” Dr. Tsanyawa said. “This collaboration demonstrates our joint commitment to strengthening civil registration and ensuring every birth is properly documented in Kano State.” He added that the materials would enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of birth registration services at both urban and rural levels, stressing that reliable population data remains key to effective governance. “The integrity of our civil registration system is paramount. These tools represent a vital step towards ensuring every birth in Kano State is accurately recorded,” he explained. “This is not just about data – it’s about planning and development. A functional CRVS system is the foundation of good governance.” Both parties reaffirmed their shared vision for a coordinated and reliable system that supports Nigeria’s demographic and health data infrastructure.  

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the appointment of Dr. Suraj Sulaiman as the new Statistician-General and Director-General of the Kano State Bureau of Statistics. This was contained in a statement issued in Kano by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, the appointment takes immediate effect, following the elevation of the former Statistician-General, Associate Professor Aliyu Isa Aliyu, to the position of Commissioner for Livestock Development. The statement described Dr. Sulaiman as an accomplished academic and mathematician with vast experience in research, teaching, and statistical analysis. Dr. Sulaiman obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor Bahru, between 2015 and 2018, with a doctoral thesis titled “New Method of Computing the Projective Polynomial Resultant Based on Dixon, Jouanolou and Jacobian Matrices.” He also holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Yasar University, Izmir, Turkey (2012–2014), and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (2006–2010). Before that, he earned a Diploma in Mathematics Education from the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano, in 2006. Governor Yusuf congratulated Dr. Sulaiman on his appointment and expressed confidence that his wealth of experience would help reposition the Bureau for greater efficiency. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting data-driven governance, noting that accurate and reliable statistics are essential for effective planning, transparency, and sustainable development in the state.

The Forum of Progressive Academics (FPA) has strongly condemned what it described as a politically motivated attempt to sabotage the 65th Independence Day celebration in Kano State. Speaking at a press conference held at NUJ Press centre in Kano Dr. Abubakar Isa Ibrahim, President of the Forum, said the group was compelled to speak out against the growing politicization of security in the state, which threatens peace and unity. According to Dr. Ibrahim, the withdrawal of police personnel from the Independence Day parade was not only abrupt but appeared to be a calculated move by unnamed political actors to destabilize Kano. “We are gathered here to reflect on yet another sad episode in the chronicle of using security for political gains,” he said, adding that the decision to pull out police from the parade review was a deliberate act of sabotage. The Forum expressed outrage over what it called a clear double standard, noting that while other states enjoyed full police participation during their celebrations, Kano was singled out for discriminatory treatment. “This undermines the pride of Kano citizens and sends a dangerous message about selective governance,” Dr. Ibrahim stated. The Forum also raised concerns about the role of the Kano State Commissioner of Police, accusing him of being complicit in the alleged sabotage. “When the police become pawns in a political chess game, the very fabric of our society is endangered,” Dr. Ibrahim declared, urging citizens to reject divisive narratives and protect the state’s heritage. Calling for civic vigilance, the Forum encouraged Kano residents to stand firm against manipulation. “We must be the guardians of peace and stability,” Dr. Ibrahim said. He also warned politicians behind the alleged sabotage that they would face electoral consequences. “You will be consigned to the political cemetery and placed in the infamous record book of enemies of Kano,” he added. The Forum noted that following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s call for the redeployment of the Police Commissioner, a wave of commentary emerged on social media and from prominent figures, revealing what it described as a larger agenda to undermine the state’s autonomy. “This is not just about one event; it’s a systemic issue,” Dr. Ibrahim emphasized. In a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Forum joined Governor Yusuf in demanding the immediate redeployment of the Commissioner of Police. “This will restore confidence in the security apparatus and demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to justice,” Dr. Ibrahim said, adding that respecting state autonomy is crucial for national stability. The Forum concluded by commending Governor Yusuf’s resilience and patriotism in ensuring the Independence Day celebration went ahead despite the challenges. “His courage and determination should be applauded by every well-meaning citizen of Kano and Nigeria,” Dr. Ibrahim said, reaffirming the Forum’s solidarity with the people of Kano. The press conference ended with a call to all stakeholders to denounce the alleged sabotage and work together to preserve the dignity and peace of Kano State.

A veteran journalist and broadcaster, Aliyu Abubakar Getso, has passed away in Kano. Family sources confirmed to Kano Times that the veteran broadcaster died on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness. The late Getso was a respected voice in the Nigerian media industry, having worked with several prominent radio stations, including Kano State Radio Corporation, Freedom Radio, Premier Radio, and Vision FM. The funeral prayer (Janazah) is scheduled to hold at 9:30 a.m. today (Sunday) at his residence around Second Gate, Janbulo, Kabuga area of Kano City.
