Kano Police, VAI Partner to Strengthen Community Relations and Accountability

The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Voluntary Aid Initiative (VAI), has commenced a series of engagements throughout November 2025 aimed at promoting mutual accountability and strengthening police-community relations in the state. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, ANIPR, MNISMA, FNACSP, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, sfipma, mnim, mnips, masis. The initiative is part of the ongoing Police Reform Initiative Project under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, and is currently being piloted in Kano State. As part of the programme, interactive sessions were held in Rano and Gwale Local Government Areas, bringing together police officers and members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to discuss ways of improving collaboration and addressing local security concerns. The meetings also trained PCRC members on their key roles in enhancing trust and cooperation between the police and the public. To further strengthen police-community engagement, friendly football matches between police officers and youths from both Rano and Gwale LGAs have been scheduled. The initiative aims to promote social cohesion, mutual respect, and positive interaction among security agencies and residents. Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the Voluntary Aid Initiative for its continued support and partnership. He urged members of the public to actively contribute to crime prevention and community safety, stressing that collective responsibility remains key to maintaining peace and stability in Kano State. The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to fostering cooperation and trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

NYSC Extends 2025 Batch ‘C’ Registration Over Network Issues

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the online registration for the 2025 Batch ‘C’ mobilization by 48 hours, setting a new deadline for midnight of Tuesday, November 11, 2025. According to the management, the extension became necessary due to persistent network challenges experienced by some Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) during the registration process. In a statement issued by Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations, NYSC expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured that efforts were being made to resolve the issues promptly. NYSC also appreciated the patience and understanding of prospective corps members, urging them to take advantage of the extended registration window. “In view of this regrettable development, Management has extended the registration period by 48 hours till midnight of Tuesday, 11 November 2025, to enable our enthusiastic PCMs to conclude their registration,” Embu added. Meanwhile, several prospective corps members have expressed frustration over difficulties accessing the portal. One applicant, Yusuf Abubakar Umar, wrote on Facebook, “I’ve been trying to register since 4 a.m., but like many others, I haven’t received any confirmation email.” The NYSC had earlier announced that registration for Batch ‘C’ would begin on November 4 and close on November 9, 2025, before the extension was announced.

University of Abuja Governing Council Appoints New Vice-Chancellor

The 11th Governing Council of the University of Abuja (now Yakubu Gowon University) has announced the appointment of Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi as the new substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution. The appointment was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council, held on Friday, November 7, 2025, under the chairmanship of Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso. According to a statement signed by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the appointment takes effect from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable tenure of five years. Professor Adamu was first appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor on August 11, 2025, by the Federal Government. Senate Approves Dr. Udeh’s Appointment as Federal Minister

The Senate has officially confirmed Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Enugu State, as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Dr. Udeh’s confirmation took place on Thursday after he appeared before the upper legislative chamber for his ministerial screening. During the session, he answered questions from lawmakers and outlined his vision and commitment to national development. He was ushered into the Senate chamber at exactly 12:15 p.m. by the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on National Assembly (Senate) Matters, marking a key step in the final phase of his appointment process. The request was read during plenary by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio. Tinubu stated that the nomination was made pursuant to Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and expressed confidence that the Senate would give the nominee expeditious consideration. Udeh’s nomination comes after the resignation of the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, the sole minister previously representing Enugu State in the Federal Executive Council. Nnaji resigned last month following controversies relating to his academic and NYSC credentials. Udeh is currently the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State and was recently elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Six bills successfully scaled the first reading stage during plenary at the Senate on Wednesday, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has announced on his social media platforms. According to Senator Jibrin, two of the bills were also considered and passed for second reading after robust debate among lawmakers. He stated, “The first is the Bill for an Act to establish a comprehensive framework for the transition to electric vehicles in Nigeria, promote local manufacturing, ensure environmental sustainability, and drive economic growth, 2025. We observed a minute of silence in his honour and resolved to send a delegation to console his family and the government of Niger State.” The Deputy Senate President described the day’s proceedings as “a demonstration of the Senate’s commitment to legislative efficiency while honouring past leaders who have contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey.”

UNDP empowers 200 Katsina youths with solar installation skills

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has trained no fewer than 200 youths in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State in solar installation and repairs. The exercise being implemented in collaboration with Murna Foundation, also trained the participants in financial literacy to ensure effective business management. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training is being done under the UNDP’s Northwest Climate-Peace Hubs, a climate-security approach to conflict prevention. Read Also: Katsina, UNDP train officials on climate security Speaking at the event, Hajiya Aisha Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer, Murna Foundation, said that the training aimed to equip the youths with marketable skills in renewable energy. Represented by Dr Shafi’u Abubakar, a member of the foundation, Ahmed said the training would create entrepreneurial opportunities for the youths. “The aim is to equip youths dwelling around security challenged border areas with both technical and business skills to launch their own ventures. “This will help to boost the economy, create a skilled workforce, support transition to green-economy, and build entrepreneurs. “The training will also provide the youth with the skills needed to become self-reliant. This move will divert their attention from crime, and reduce unemployment,” she said. Earlier, the Chairman, Jibia Local Government Area, Alhaji Sirajo Ado, said that the council was ready for partnership to empower women and youths in the area. Represented by the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Aliyu, Ado urged the participants to imbibe knowledge that would be of benefits to them. Also speaking, the District Head of Jibia, Alhaji Rabe Rabiu, commended the UNDP and Murna Foundation for the gesture, and described it as ‘a step in the right direction’ Represented by Alhaji Sade Rabiu, Magajin Garin Jibia, Rabiu urged the youths to see the training as a life-changing opportunity. Former Kano State Governor and elder statesman, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has reflected deeply on his life as he turned 70, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness, patience, and gratitude to God as essential virtues for achieving inner peace and a meaningful life. Speaking during a media chat with journalists in Kano on Wednesday, Shekarau said that his journey through moments of joy and hardship had taught him valuable lessons and that true tranquility lies in faith, humility, and forgiveness. “I have forgiven everyone who has wronged me, and I seek forgiveness from all those I may have wronged. I don’t know if I have much to leave behind, but I have learned countless lessons over these 70 years — both good and bad. The teachings of Islam have guided me along the right path, and that is what I am most proud of,” Shekarau stated. NIS to Launch New Biometric Travel Passport for Nigerians Overseas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it will soon introduce a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), a new biometric travel document designed to assist Nigerians abroad whose passports are expired, lost, or stolen to return home safely and verifiably. This was contained in a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi, on Wednesday in Abuja. According to the statement, the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, made this known during the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes, co-hosted by Nigeria and France in Abuja. Nandap said the introduction of STEP would replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening identity management and border governance in line with global best practices. Nandap added that the initiative underscored the Service’s commitment to efficient service delivery, robust identity protection, and the modernization of travel documentation processes. The meeting, which brought together representatives of the African Union, ECOWAS, the European Union, NAPTIP, and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, focused on strengthening collaboration to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking. It also emphasized the need for preventive measures, protection of victims, and effective prosecution strategies across regional migration routes. Delivering her keynote address titled “Insights on Prevention and Protection as Strategic Pillars to Effective Law Enforcement and Prosecution Responses,” the CGI highlighted the Service’s reform agenda geared toward enhancing migration management, international cooperation, and capacity building. The statement further noted that Nandap reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global migration dialogues, pledging that the NIS would continue to align its policies and operations with international standards to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration.
