Ganduje Hosts Kano Governor’s Spokesperson, APC Leaders in Abuja

By Umar Idris Shuaibu The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, over the weekend hosted the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, alongside other APC leaders at his residence in Abuja. This was conveyed in a statement issued by Mohammed Garba, Chief of Staff to the former Governor of Kano State, who said the visit formed part of ongoing consultations with key party stakeholders from Kano State. According to the statement, those in attendance included the Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, Hon. Anas Mukhtar Bello Dan Maliki, among other APC leaders from the area. Garba explained that the meeting was aimed at strengthening unity within the APC and fostering closer cooperation among party leaders, particularly in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area. It added that the participants also reviewed prevailing political developments and examined ways to better align party activities with effective administration and improved service delivery. Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has described the recent defection of the Kano State Government to the APC as a deliberate and strategic decision aimed at aligning the state with the Federal Government to accelerate development and improve the welfare of its people. Speaking in an interview with the editor ‘The Historica Nigeria‘ Umar Idris Shuaibu in Abuja, Dr. Ganduje said the Kano State Government’s decision to join the APC reflects a growing realization that the ruling party remains the most viable platform for sustainable governance in Nigeria. According to him, the APC is not only expanding in numbers but also attracting what he described as “quality followers” across the country. “The Kano State Government has seen clearly that the APC is a living party, a party that is increasing in followers, and not just in numbers but in quality,” Ganduje said. Dr. Ganduje traced the political developments in Kano to the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, noting that the APC’s loss of the governorship paved the way for the emergence of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) administration, which he said soon descended into internal crises. He explained that persistent disagreements, litigations, and factional conflicts within the NNPP eventually weakened the party, prompting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, “in his wisdom,” to defect to the APC. But later, the party went into disarray, disagreements and litigations everywhere. The governor, in his own wisdom, decided to cross-carpet to our party, the APC,” Ganduje stated. He further recalled that before 2015, both he and the governor were members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that political movements in Kano have often been driven by personal ambitions rather than ideology. Ganduje said the earlier defection from the APC was influenced by the presidential ambition of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which, according to him, failed due to a miscalculation of nationwide political appeal. “Unfortunately, he could not assess his popularity at the national level, and that resulted in a great loss, forcing him to move to another party,” he added. With Kano now under APC control, Dr. Ganduje expressed confidence that the party is politically strong and institutionally positioned to deliver good governance, raise living standards, and mobilize support for President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027. “As of now, we are happy. We are strong enough, we have a government, and we are ready to work for the people, to improve their living standards, for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure a second term, and for the governor himself. That is what we are anticipating,” he said. Why Northerners Will Back Tinubu Again Addressing growing conversations around northern support for President Tinubu’s re-election, Ganduje framed the issue within Nigeria’s long-standing zoning arrangement between the North and South. He recalled that the late President Muhammadu Buhari served for eight years, after which power politically shifted to the South, culminating in Tinubu’s victory in 2023 with significant northern backing. Ganduje described President Tinubu as an astute politician with proven administrative capacity, citing his tenure as governor of Lagos State, widely regarded as Nigeria’s most complex sub-national economy. He also recalled Tinubu’s three-day colloquium in Kano ahead of the 2023 election, describing it as a turning point that reshaped northern public opinion in his favour. “Now that he is completing his first term by 2027, we expect him to continue with a second term. After that, the presidency will naturally return to the North. That is one of the reasons northerners are confident in supporting him,” Ganduje said. Reforms, Infrastructure, and Economic Direction Dr. Ganduje pointed to President Tinubu’s ongoing reforms as critical to Nigeria’s long-term economic stability, social development, and national unity. He highlighted the continuation of major infrastructure projects initiated under the Buhari administration, including the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline, the expansion of the national railway network from Lagos through Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano, Dambatta, Kazaure, Daura, Katsina, and onward to Maradi in Niger Republic. He also referenced major highway projects linking Lagos to Sokoto and the coastal superhighway connecting the South-West to Cross River and Calabar. According to Ganduje, improved federal revenue inflows have enabled state governments to meet salary obligations without frequent federal intervention, a sharp contrast to previous years. Inflation, Cost of Living, and Regional Realities Responding to public concerns over inflation and rising living costs, Ganduje urged Nigerians to view the issue within a global context, warning against regional comparisons that oversimplify economic realities. “Inflation is everywhere. Do you think things are cheaper in the South?” he asked rhetorically. He cites an example with the historical differences in educational development between the North and South stem from the distinct paths through which Western education and Islam entered Nigeria. On food inflation, Ganduje argued that northern Nigeria remains relatively insulated due to its agricultural dominance. “We farm in the North; we produce the food Nigerians consume. Prices of food items and grains are gradually coming down. It is a global challenge, but the impact is not the same everywhere,” he said. Security Challenges and Ongoing Efforts On insecurity, Ganduje acknowledged that Nigeria’s security challenges predate the current administration, tracing their roots back to the Obasanjo era, through the Jonathan and Buhari administrations. According to him, the APC is not only expanding in membership but also attracting what he described as “quality followers,” adding that the party’s growing national appeal makes it a natural choice for any government seeking meaningful partnership with the centre. Tinubu’s Re-election and Zoning Principle On the 2027 presidential election, Ganduje said northerners are increasingly inclined to support President Tinubu’s re-election, citing Nigeria’s zoning arrangement between the North and South. He recalled that the late President Muhammadu Buhari spent eight years in office, making it equitable for the presidency to remain in the South for another term under Tinubu, who he described as an experienced politician with a proven track record as Governor of Lagos State. Ganduje also referenced Tinubu’s Kano colloquium, which he said marked a turning point in northern public opinion during the last election. He expressed optimism that after Tinubu’s second term, power would rotate back to the North in line with the country’s informal power-sharing understanding. Security and National Stability On security, Ganduje traced Nigeria’s insecurity challenges to earlier administrations, noting that Boko Haram once controlled several local governments in the North-East before significant progress was made under the Buhari administration. KASPA Implements Free Healthcare Programme for Vulnerable Kano Residents

Kano State Government has expanded its social protection interventions with the approval of a free healthcare programme targeting 20,000 orphans and senior citizens across the state. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment of the Kano State Social Protection Agency (KASPA), Rabiu Khalil Kura. The initiative is being implemented by KASPA as part of its mandate to provide social care and protection services to the poor and most vulnerable members of society. Speaking during a roundtable discussion with agency directors at its Kano headquarters, the Director General, Dr. Fateema Abubakar Abdullahi (Amneef), said the programme aligns with the social protection agenda of the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. It is aimed at easing hardship and improving access to essential services for vulnerable populations. Emirate Crisis Nears Resolution, Kano Govt Says

The Kano State Government has assured residents that the lingering emirate tussle in the state will soon be resolved amicably. The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, gave the assurance on Thursday while addressing journalists in Kano, saying concrete steps have already been taken to restore lasting peace and stability. Waiya said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to dialogue with all stakeholders, stressing that the emirate matter will not be allowed to continue generating tension or undermining governance in the state. He explained that the government’s approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State. It will be recalled that Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano in May 2024 following the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero, after Governor Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. The law repealed the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019 and dissolved the emirate councils created under the previous administration. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, residents should expect more dividends of democracy,” Waiya said. He emphasised that the state government remains focused on governance, unity, and development, urging residents to remain calm and supportive as efforts continue to resolve outstanding issues and move Kano forward. Yusuf did not leave NNPP for self interest but Kano development and prosperity – NNPP

The Dr. Boniface Aniebonam led New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) says Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State left the Kwankwasiya Movement and the party because of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso’s slavery intentions and not for selfish reasons. The party also stated that the main betrayer in the saga is Kwankwaso, who betrayed the trust of the NNPP founder, Aniebonam and not Yusuf. All efforts made by Yusuf as the leader of NNPP for reconciliation were resisted out of arrogance and greed. The party was reacting to comments by Elder Buba Galadima on Yusuf’s defection. In a statement by its National Vice Chairman Northwest, Alhaji Sani Danmasani, the party stated: “Let the relations and families of Kwankwaso and Galadima intervene before depression will catch up with them. “This is because a critical analysis of the condition of Galadima on Arise television suggested that something may become clinically wrong. “The cross over of Yusuf to APC is affecting Galadima’ and Kwankwaso so much that the bitterness and pain are evident in their speeches. It is most likely that these great men are having sleepless nights.” According to the party, what is striking in the details of Galadima’s expression during the session on Arise TV were his experiences, travelling by road from Enugu airport to Umuawulu town in Anambra, hometown of NNPP Founder, Aniebonam. “Galadima’ said he got to Anambra by 2.a.m to meet Aniebonam for the purposes of getting a political platform for Kwankwaso and others against the 2023 general elections. “Incidentally Yusuf who is a prime beneficiary of the risky trip to Umuawulu is the one found to have betrayed NNPP family to join their enemy, a former governor Kano state and APC stalwart, Ganduje. “Galadima and Kwankwaso crying fowl of betrayal of trust were the same people who were favoured at no cost to use the NNPP platform to contest elections in 2023. “They were the same people who betrayed Aniebonam, and fighting to hijack the party he founded 2001. They are still fighting to hijack the structure of the NNPP without conscience, yet calling Yusuf a betrayer. “One begin to wonder why Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima are crying fowl and disturbing the peace of the society as if they do not know that God acts differently.” It noted that Yusuf’s decision was a self defence , protection from modern slavery and undue interference from Kwankwaso in governance of Kano state. The party said that rather than continue to lament over Yusuf, Kwankwaso and his group should seek the face of God and ask for forgiveness from those they betrayed. The party noted that Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano politics has fizzled out, and will not affect Yusuf’s re-election in 2027.

Kano Gov’s Defection: As Gov Radda Concretizes Synergy With Kano

By Abba Anwar Immediately after his official decamping to All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kano state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Katsina state Dr Umar Dikko Radda, described the move as “… strategic for regional unity, stability and development.” In a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the Chairman of the North West Governors’ Forum, Radda, after congratulating Kano governor for the move, he signaled his intention of working in good synergy with his Kano counterpart for finding lasting solutions to insecurity, political instability and other vices. He was instructive when he said, according to the statement, “The decision of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to join the APC is a demonstration of responsible leadership and a strategic step towards deepening cooperation with the Federal Government and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the benefit of Kano State and the entire North West.” The statement clearly indicates maturity in governor Radda’s statesmanship position across the zone, his readiness to work tirelessly with governor Yusuf in repositioning and revitalizing the zone for better tomorrow. In areas like sustainable development, enhanced security, fight against youth restiveness and drug abuse. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has demonstrated this by placing peace, stability and progress above all other considerations.” In my estimation and understanding, the way Kano APC received the hitherto New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governor into its fold, with all sense of dignity, humility and magnanimity, was what moved other APC North West Governors to collectively congratulate him through the able leadership of the governor of Katsina state. The statement disclosed that, “On behalf of the North West Governors’ Forum, Governor Radda congratulated Governor Yusuf and assured him of the full support and cooperation of his colleagues across the region and the country, while wishing him wisdom, strength and success in his leadership.” All who is who in Kano APC was very much around and received the governor with all open hearts. To the extent that, he was assured by the APC leader in Kano, then, former governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, CON, that, all paths were set for the new entrant, governor Yusuf, to seek for re-election come 2027. The same assurance was given by the Deputy Senate President, Distinguished Senator Barau I Jibrin, CFR, that, he jettisoned his ambition and gave way for the incumbent to contest for a second tenure, 2027. Many good wishes and encouragements were transparently stared at the good face of the governor. Observing how comfortable the Kano state governor was, during the grand event for his decamping, that took place at Government House, Kano, governor Radda believes further that, another good partner for meaningful development is now on board. Hence the unwavering support from other North West governors to governor Yusuf. Radda’s glaring happiness and show of commitment towards the development of Kano, was what prompted him to acknowledge and accept new political alignment and realignment with Kanawan Dabo at the peak of political cohesion, as governor Yusuf cross-carpeted. In the referenced press statement, the Katsina state governor hinted that with Yusuf’s exit from NNPP to APC, the synergy between Kano and federal government, which he termed as political realignment would enhance the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda in critical areas such as security cooperation, agricultural transformation, industrialisation and youth empowerment. With this, we have nothing to add, as encomium to the people’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who has energetic state governors under the platform of his party, the APC. Such as Governor Radda, who leads North West Governors’ Forum. In another way round, Katsina state governor, is very instructive to some basic advances that, Kano state under APC, would receive critical attention from the federal government. This, I observed severally. This could also mean, Radda’s attention and unwavering commitment for development, are focused on Kano, with the entrance of Yusuf into APC’s fold. This means a lot as build – up to APC’s victory come 2027. It also means his un-arguable commitment to regional cohesion and cooperation. To fully appreciate and strengthen the courage of other elected officials from Kano, who also decamped to the ruling APC, in the press release, the leader of North West Governors’ Forum, “… welcomes the decision of members of the Kano State Executive Council, the State House of Assembly, National Assembly members and local government Chairmen to also join the APC, describing it as a strong signal of political stability, unity of purpose and shared commitment to development in the state.” Anwar writes from Kano Wednesday, 28th January, 2026

By embracing the APC legacy family, Governor Yusuf has demonstrated qualities that are increasingly rare in our present-day political landscape, where the sight of the Governor sitting at the same table with his former greatest opponents both at the historic Coronation Hall and within the Main Government House, paints a vivid picture of a transition to a new political approach rooted in forgiveness instead of consistent fights. It signals a mature understanding that the seat of power is a trust to be used for unity, rather than a weapon for perpetual division. Having secured the endorsement of the former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, the Governor has effectively silenced the drums of political warfare. However, as the opposition regroup from the camp the Governor recently departed, the “Inevitable Political Fight” looms on the horizon. To survive this, the next move for His Excellency must be a deliberate strategy to ensure this harmonious agenda reaches the polling units. Discontentment often begins at the grassroots when a “winner-takes-all” mentality is introduced; therefore, it is a non-negotiable mandate that no one, regardless of whether they are “old” or “new” APC is segregated or marginalized at the local level. This inclusive approach will ensure that no member of the party feels like a stranger, creating a unified front that can withstand any regrouping opposition. Governor Yusuf’s alignment ensures that Kano, the commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria, regains its seamless synergy with the center to attract infrastructure and investment confidence under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. By prioritizing the stability and assimilation of all followers over political excitement, he has set a new standard for leadership. If the administration successfully takes this message of forgiveness down to the grassroots, it will cement a golden era where statesmanship triumphs over ego, ensuring that the sun of development continues to shine on every corner of our dear state.
