Abubakar Bichi Commissions 120 Health Workers, Pushes Upgrade of Bichi General Hospital

The Federal Government is set to establish a teaching hospital in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare, the Member representing Bichi Federal Constituency, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar, has announced.

This was disclosed on Saturday during the commissioning of 120 temporary health workers recruited by the Kabir Abubakar Bichi Foundation for deployment to primary healthcare centres across Bichi Local Government Area.

The event was attended by the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, alongside other government officials, traditional leaders and stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, said consultations were ongoing with the Minister of Health and the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital to facilitate the establishment of the proposed teaching hospital in Bichi.

He expressed optimism that the project would receive final approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the current year’s budget.

The lawmaker also revealed plans to upgrade Bichi General Hospital to a specialist hospital, saying the move would strengthen healthcare delivery and ease pressure on major referral hospitals in Kano metropolis.

According to him, the radiology department of the hospital has already been equipped with a digital X-ray machine, 40 oxygen machines and four dialysis machines, while an additional four dialysis machines are expected soon.

He added that the hospital is awaiting the delivery of a 64-slice CT scan machine to complete the ongoing upgrade, after which the Kano State Government would be invited to commission the new facilities.

Hon. Abubakar further disclosed plans to modernise the hospital’s surgical and operating theatre to meet the standards of leading healthcare institutions in the state.

He noted that expanding healthcare services in Bichi would help reduce patient congestion at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Kano.

The federal lawmaker also appealed to the Kano State Government to upgrade the Danzabuwa and Saye Primary Healthcare Centres to general hospitals, pledging his support through the provision of infrastructure and medical equipment.

He commended the health committee, chaired by Professor Yusuf Muhammad, for conducting what he described as a transparent recruitment exercise for the newly engaged health workers.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Hon. Abubakar urged them to carry out their duties with professionalism, dedication and integrity while serving their communities.

He further appealed to the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to absorb the 120 temporary health workers into the state’s permanent and pensionable workforce.

The lawmaker also praised Governor Yusuf for his investments in the health and education sectors, describing them as important contributions to improving the welfare of the people of Kano.

The 120 health workers are expected to strengthen service delivery at primary healthcare centres across Bichi Local Government Area as efforts continue to improve access to quality healthcare in the constituency.
