Bandits abduct Zamfara LG Chairman, kill four security operatives

Armed bandits have abducted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Bungudu, following a deadly night attack on his residence that claimed the lives of four security operatives.

The attack occurred on Thursday night at the chairman’s residence in the Zango area of Bungudu town, less than 20 kilometres from the Zamfara State capital, Gusau.

According to reports, the heavily armed attackers overpowered the security personnel guarding the residence, killing two police officers and two vigilantes before abducting the council chairman and members of his family.

Efforts by security operatives to repel the attackers were unsuccessful as the assailants reportedly outgunned the security team and escaped with their victims.

Those reportedly abducted include the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi (popularly known as Nura N.U), Halliru Ahmad Soja, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, and Hussaini Naira, a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator and recharge card vendor.

The security personnel reportedly killed during the attack were identified as Inspector Basiru Lawal, Constable Hamza Muhammad, Nura ADC, a vigilante operative, and Ibrahim Ba’are, another vigilante member.

A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attack as swift and well coordinated, leaving little opportunity for the security personnel to mount an effective defence.

According to the resident, the security operatives fought bravely to repel the attackers but were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the bandits.

“The bandits came into the town determined to carry out their mission. The chairman’s security team resisted, but they were outgunned,” the source was quoted as saying.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have continued to affect communities across Zamfara State despite ongoing security operations aimed at curbing banditry and other criminal activities.
