Kano Government Trains 132 Reporters to Strengthen Public Communication

The Kano State Government has commenced a four-day capacity-building workshop for 132 Senior Special Reporters (SSRs) and Special Reporters (SRs) to improve the quality of information dissemination across the state. Declaring the workshop open, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, described the initiative as a “call to service” and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparent and impactful communication. He emphasized the role of informed citizens and well-trained reporters in a vibrant democracy. The Governor commended the Ministry of Information and the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) for organizing the training and urged participants to upgrade their storytelling skills, ethical standards, and technical competence to build public trust. He noted that while SSRs and SRs are not official spokespersons, their widespread presence across MDAs and digital platforms positions them to effectively project government activities. Waiya revealed that this marks the sixth such training since January 2025, with a total investment of N116,205,800. The 132 participants 71 SSRs and 61 SRs, were carefully selected for their key roles in the state’s communication structure. He also praised Governor Yusuf for his continued support and commitment to strategic communication. He praised the Commissioner’s visionary leadership in repositioning the state’s information structure. The workshop, themed “Updating Basic Mass Communication Skills for Enhanced Government Communication,” is facilitated by experts from the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, and organized in collaboration with the IIJ. It is expected to significantly boost the effectiveness of government-affiliated reporters in engaging the public.

ASUU Directs Nationwide Strike Over Delayed June Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its branches nationwide to suspend services following the delay in the payment of June 2025 salaries. The action is in line with the union’s “No Pay, No Work” resolution, which mandates members to withdraw services if salaries are delayed beyond the third day of a new month. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja, stating that branches such as the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already commenced strike actions in compliance with the directive. He criticized the Federal Government’s indifference to the plight of university lecturers, who he said are already struggling with meager pay. Piwuna noted that salary delays became frequent after the migration from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). Despite several engagements with the Minister of Education and the Accountant General of the Federation, the union said the issue remains unresolved. In addition to the salary delays, the union is also demanding the immediate release of the outstanding N10 billion out of the N50 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) owed to its members. So far, only N40 billion has been paid. At the University of Jos, ASUU branch chairman Jurbe Molwus confirmed that lecturers have withdrawn from lectures and meetings in compliance with NEC’s resolution. He added that the strike monitoring team has been activated to ensure full compliance. ASUU insists that unless salaries are paid promptly, affected branches will remain on strike.

APC Begins Sale of Forms for National Assembly Bye-Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms for aspirants contesting in the forthcoming National Assembly bye-elections scheduled for August 16 across 12 states. The sale of forms began on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, marking the start of the party’s internal preparations to fill vacant legislative seats left by lawmakers who resigned or passed away. Among the early aspirants is Mr. Oscar Aghedo, contesting for the House of Representatives seat for Ovia South-West/North-East Federal Constituency in Edo State. Speaking after collecting his nomination and expression of interest forms, Aghedo pledged to provide effective representation with a strong focus on infrastructural development. My intention is to make good laws and ensure proper representation for my people, especially in infrastructure,” Aghedo said. He also expressed appreciation to constituents who accompanied him and assured them of impactful representation if elected. Aghedo commended the immediate past representative—now Edo State Deputy Governor—for notable infrastructural projects, promising to build upon that legacy while placing greater emphasis on human capacity development and empowerment programs for youth and women. “I have the blessings of God, the governor’s support, and the mandate of my people,” he added, emphasizing that meaningful youth engagement would reduce crime and enhance productivity in the constituency. Also at the party secretariat was Yakubu Waziri, an aspirant for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State. Waziri noted the area had suffered years of insecurity but credited recent improvements to interventions by President Bola Tinubu and the Kaduna State Government. “We are now experiencing not just relative peace, but what feels like permanent peace,” Waziri said. He pledged to prioritize security and youth empowerment if elected, stating he remains confident due to divine support, popular backing, and alignment with the state governor’s developmental agenda.

Customs Disclaims Viral CBT Recruitment Notice

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has discredited a fraudulent press release making the rounds on social media and messaging platforms, which falsely claims that a Computer-Based Test (CBT) for its ongoing recruitment exercise is scheduled for July 2025. In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS categorically stated that the announcement is fake, misleading, and did not originate from the Service. “The so-called press release did not emanate from the Nigeria Customs Service. At no point did we announce a CBT for July 2025,” the statement read. The Service further pointed out several inconsistencies in the fake notice, particularly in its formatting and e-signature, which differ from the NCS’s official communication style. It also described the recruitment timeline mentioned in the document as structurally faulty and unrelated to any legitimate process. It reiterated that all credible updates regarding its recruitment will only be available on the Service’s official website, verified social media handles, and national newspapers. The statement also revealed that the NCS is investigating the source of the misinformation and vowed to take legal action against those found responsible. “We remain committed to transparency and integrity in all our processes and appreciate the vigilance of the public in helping us combat misinformation,” Maiwada reiterated.

Maituraka donates borehole, inverter to Katsina community mosque

A philanthropist,Alhaji Abdul’aziz Maituraka, has donated a borehole to a community Mosque in Daki Tara, Kwanar Damaga, Kofar Kaura Quarters, Katsina. Maituraka, the Special Assistant to the Deputy President of the Senate, also donated an inverter to supply power to the mosque. Speaking during the donation on Sunday, Maituraka, a chieftain of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), commended the members of the mosque committee for their commitment and dedication to modernising it. According to him, his door is always open for any support that will promote Islam and move the community and state forward. Maituraka, however, said it was necessary for them (Almajiris) to be self-reliant, in addition to their knowledge seeking, so that they can assist others. Maituraka also called on the leadership of the mosque to allow the residents of the community to fetch water from the borehole. The philanthropist seized the opportunity to thank friends, family members and all well-wishers for blessing the wedding of his daughter which took place on Saturday. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Katsina Local Government Area (LGA), Alhaji Isah Miqdad, commended Maituraka for sinking the borehole, saying that it would improve water supply in the area. Miqdad also promised to provide additional ceiling fans and other forms of support to the residents of the community. In response, the chairman of the mosque committee, Sheikh Hadi Balarabe, commended Maituraka for the support, calling on other wealthy individuals to support the religion as a multiplying reward. Ibadan Mourns as Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Passes Away at 90

Ibadanland has been thrown into mourning following the death of its revered traditional ruler, the Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. The monarch reportedly died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. Oba Olakulehin, who was installed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland on July 12, 2024, reigned for exactly one year. His ascension followed the passing of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died at the age of 81 on March 14, 2024. AI Threatens 92 Million Jobs Globally in Five Years – FUK VC

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Professor Umaru Pate, has raised alarm over the potential loss of more than 92 million jobs globally within the next five years due to the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. Speaking during the university’s combined 6th to 9th convocation ceremony, Professor Pate noted that while new technologies are poised to create opportunities, only individuals equipped with the right digital and cognitive skills will benefit. “Latest global reports suggest that in the next five years, over 92 million jobs will disappear while 120 million new ones will emerge, courtesy of the Internet of Things, robotics, big data, and the evolution of Artificial Intelligence,” he said. “We need new mindsets, new skills, and enhanced cognitive abilities to remain relevant or risk being left behind.” Read Also: Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Appointed Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano He warned that Nigeria can no longer afford to continue preparing graduates for jobs that are becoming obsolete. According to him, universities must shift towards AI-driven, future-oriented teaching models. “Oil is no longer the global power resource, it is now knowledge and innovation. Our universities must lead this transition and drive national progress,” the VC stated. Professor Pate emphasized that innovation thrives only in environments that promote research, critical thinking, well-equipped laboratories, and strong market linkages. “Innovation does not emerge in a vacuum,” he said. He called for sustained investment in youth education, stressing that the development of Nigeria hinges on preparing young people to tackle modern challenges such as poverty, crime, corruption, and climate change through education. The Vice Chancellor also urged the graduating students to embrace digital learning and develop strong analytical skills. “Digital literacy and critical thinking are essential tools for survival and success in today’s fast-changing world,” he added. He acknowledged the Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, for delivering a pre-convocation lecture titled “Medical Science: Past, Present and Future,” which he said would guide the development of the university’s upcoming medical college curriculum. Professor Pate also appreciated the federal government’s continued support, noting key capital projects recently funded at the institution, including N4 billion for a new Senate Building, N1.3 billion for a perimeter fence, hostel construction, and equipping of science laboratories. A total of 6,870 students graduated during the convocation. Among them, 91 received First Class degrees, 1,899 earned Second Class Upper, 3,917 bagged Second Class Lower, 960 graduated with Third Class, and three students earned a Pass. From the School of Postgraduate Studies, 16 students were awarded PhDs, 492 completed Master’s programs, and 76 obtained Postgraduate Diplomas. The university also conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on five distinguished Nigerians: Ambassador Lawrence Okolio Chikezie Agubuzu, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, and Dr. Kole Shettima.

Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Appointed Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the appointment of His Royal Highness, Justice (Rtd) Sidi Muhammad Bage, the Emir of Lafia, as the new Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano. This was announced in a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Friday. The appointment, described by stakeholders as visionary, underscores the Yusuf administration’s commitment to fostering collaboration between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and its academic centers of excellence. He began his judicial career as a Magistrate in 1982 and rose through the ranks to become a High Court Judge in 1992. In 2007, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal, and later elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in January 2017. Following the demise of Emir Isa Mustapha Agwai I, he ascended the throne as the 17th Emir of Lafia in March 2019. Emir Bage is widely respected as a promoter of peace, justice, and social harmony. His appointment as Chancellor reflects Northwest University’s tradition of drawing on the wisdom and integrity of Nigeria’s most accomplished leaders to serve in ceremonial and advisory capacities. Governor Yusuf noted that appointing a retired jurist and respected traditional ruler as Chancellor demonstrates the institution’s commitment to values such as excellence, fairness, and national development. The governor praised Emir Bage’s reputation for equity, leadership, and community engagement, qualities he believes will inspire the university community and contribute to its growth. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Sunday held a thanksgiving service in Abuja to mark what he described as the successful execution and commissioning of key infrastructure projects in the nation’s capital. The service, which took place at St. James Anglican Church in Asokoro, was broadcast live on major national television networks, including Arise TV, News Central, and Africa Independent Television (AIT). The inauguration campaign was widely promoted with front-page advertisements in major national newspapers. Projects commissioned during the exercise include the newly refurbished Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC), the Idu–Zuba Road, the A2 junction–Pai Town Road, and the Life Camp Junction–Ring Road corridor. President Tinubu personally commissioned the renovated ICC, which has been renamed in his honour. The N39 billion project, however, sparked public debate over the cost. Responding to the criticism, Wike defended the expenditure. “Those criticising the project do not have good taste. Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, must not only claim that status—it must be visible in our infrastructure,” he said. “Nobody who loves this country would criticise the International Conference Centre,” he added.
