Friends of Kano, a non-governmental organisation, has called on elders, religious leaders, politicians and other stakeholders to intervene in the lingering Kano Emirate dispute and work towards a lasting resolution.

The appeal was contained in a press release signed by the group’s Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Isah, who expressed concern that the prolonged tussle was threatening the peace, unity and economic development for which Kano State is renowned.

The group described the Kano Emirate as one of the oldest traditional institutions in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, noting that Kano had historically served as a melting point for people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and a major centre of commercial activities.

It warned that the protracted dispute over the emirship was affecting the state’s longstanding atmosphere of peaceful coexistence and could undermine business confidence.

According to the group, the uncertainty surrounding the dispute had raised concerns among business operators, with some reportedly considering relocating their businesses if the situation continued.

“We cannot fold our hands when our people have been divided by the Emirate issue,” the statement said.

Although acknowledging that the matter was before a court of law, Friends of Kano maintained that elders and religious leaders had important roles to play in facilitating dialogue and exploring an amicable, out-of-court settlement where legally appropriate.

The organisation stressed that such interventions could help reduce tensions, promote understanding among the parties and protect the interests of residents.

It also called on the Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to establish a high-powered committee to address the dispute and work towards a sustainable resolution.

Friends of Kano said resolving the crisis was important not only for the traditional institution but also for preserving Kano’s reputation as a centre of commerce, peaceful coexistence and cultural heritage.

The organisation, which is based in Kano, said it was established to protect and promote the interests of the state through advocacy.
