Abdulaziz Ganduje returns to APC, shakes up Kano 2027 politics
By Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano
Abdulaziz Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, eldest son of former Kano State Governor and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has returned to the APC after quitting the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Abdulaziz announced his decision today, in Ganduje, his hometown in Kano State, several months after joining the NDC and expressing interest in contesting the Dawakin Tofa/Tofa/Rimin Gado Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
His return to the APC marks a significant turn in his political journey and comes at a time when political parties in Kano are intensifying mobilisation and realigning their structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the ceremony in Ganduje, Abdulaziz was seen among APC supporters as he received the party’s membership form, formally signalling his return to the ruling party.

Abdulaziz’s earlier decision to join the NDC had attracted considerable attention in Kano, particularly because he had indicated his intention to pursue an elective position under a platform associated with former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
His latest decision represents a notable political reversal and places him back within the APC, the platform with which his father has been closely associated for years.
Reports indicate that Abdulaziz’s return followed difficulties surrounding his bid to secure the NDC ticket for the federal constituency.
The development is likely to generate fresh discussions within Kano’s political circles, especially over its implications for the Dawakin Tofa, Tofa and Rimin Gado Federal Constituency.
Abdulaziz had previously positioned himself for the 2027 House of Representatives contest, making his latest movement particularly significant as political parties begin to settle their candidates and strengthen their structures ahead of the elections.
His return also comes against the backdrop of continuing political realignments in Kano, where politicians and supporters have continued to move between parties as alliances take shape ahead of 2027.
Back on his father’s political platform
The move is also noteworthy because of Abdulaziz’s family background.
His father, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023 and later became National Chairman of the APC. He remains a prominent figure in the party and in Kano’s political affairs.
Abdulaziz’s brief departure from the APC therefore represented a departure from the political platform that had defined much of his father’s political career.
His return now brings him back into the APC fold at a crucial period in the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
Next phase for Abdulaziz?
While his return to the APC has been announced, his next political step remains a matter of interest.
For now, his return adds another layer to Kano’s rapidly changing political landscape and underscores the fluidity of political alliances as the 2027 elections draw closer.
The development is expected to generate further reactions as the APC and other political parties continue consultations, mobilisation and candidate selection across Kano State.
