ASUU Strike: NSUK lecturers begin indefinite action over unpaid entitlements

Lecturers at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), have commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alongside unresolved local issues affecting the institution.

The NSUK branch began the industrial action on Monday, August 10, 2026, after what it described as prolonged and unsuccessful engagements with the relevant authorities. The development has already disrupted academic activities at the university.

The branch chairman, Zubairu Loko, announced the strike at a press conference in Keffi, saying the union had exhausted avenues of dialogue without securing satisfactory implementation of agreements reached.

According to him, the branch also obtained approval from ASUU’s national leadership before commencing the action.

“Dialogue without implementation cannot continue indefinitely,” Loko said, stressing that the union remained willing to engage in genuine discussions provided such engagements resulted in concrete implementation.

The branch said its grievances extend beyond the federal agreement, with outstanding local entitlements reportedly exceeding N3 billion. These include Earned Academic Allowance, consequential adjustments arising from the implementation of the national minimum wage and the Federal Government-approved salary increase for university lecturers.

Loko said the union had engaged the university management, governing council and Nasarawa State Government on the outstanding issues but had yet to reach a resolution.

“We have withdrawn our services. There will be no teaching, no supervision, no research until our money is paid,” he said.

20 universities on strike path

The NSUK action comes amid a wider escalation in ASUU’s dispute with the government over the implementation of the 2025 agreement.

Following its National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, ASUU authorised 20 university branches to begin procedures for industrial action, including the issuance of 14-day ultimatums to the relevant authorities.

The affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Abia State University, Imo State University, Niger Delta University and Taraba State University.

Others are the University of Africa, Toru-Orua; Bayelsa Medical University; Ambrose Alli University; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology; and Northwest University, Kano.

However, reports indicate that some branches, including NSUK and Imo State University, have already commenced indefinite strikes.

ASUU appeals for intervention

The NSUK branch appealed to the Federal Government, Nasarawa State Government, the university’s governing council and management, as well as other stakeholders, to intervene and resolve the issues responsible for the industrial action.

The union also apologised to students and parents for the inconvenience caused by the strike, but maintained that the responsibility for restoring industrial harmony rests with the authorities addressing the outstanding demands.

ASUU’s national leadership is expected to review developments at an emergency meeting scheduled for the end of August or early September and determine its next course of action.
