Kwankwaso: Incumbency won’t save Governors in 2027

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has warned governors seeking re-election in 2027 that relying on electoral manipulation and state government structures may not guarantee their return to office.

Kwankwaso issued the warning on Sunday in Abuja during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series.

The former Kano State governor said the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections was changing, suggesting that incumbents who believe they could use the machinery of government to secure another term might be in for a surprise.

According to him, many governors seeking re-election in 2027 may ultimately be disappointed, particularly where voters reject their performance and political conduct.

Kwankwaso’s comments come as political activities and realignments intensify across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, with incumbent governors, opposition parties and political movements already positioning themselves for the contest.

The NDC chieftain has remained active in the emerging political realignment, with the party positioning itself as an alternative platform ahead of the elections.

His remarks are also likely to generate reactions among governors and their supporters, particularly in states where incumbents are preparing to seek second terms.

The 2027 governorship contests are expected to be shaped by a combination of incumbency, party structures, candidate popularity, internal party dynamics and voters’ assessment of government performance.

Kwankwaso’s warning therefore adds to the growing political debate over whether incumbency advantage will remain decisive in the next election cycle.
