Gombe Education Commissioner Highlights Eight Key Initiatives in One Week
The Gombe State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Umar Maigari, has recorded a series of engagements and interventions aimed at strengthening education, expanding access to learning facilities and improving the welfare of learners across the state.
The activities, which covered early childhood education, tertiary institutions, adult and non-formal education, women empowerment, climate resilience and school infrastructure, reflected the ministry’s broader efforts to improve education delivery in Gombe State.
As part of efforts to improve access to quality early childhood education, Prof. Maigari facilitated the construction of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) facilities at Hashidu and Malala.
The facilities are expected to provide safer and more child-friendly learning environments for young children in the affected communities.

The Commissioner also engaged heads of tertiary institutions and boards under the restructured Ministry of Education, with discussions focused on strengthening collaboration and developing strategic plans to improve tertiary education and institutional performance across the state.
She also received a former Minister of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Aishatu Jibril Dukku, who congratulated her on her reappointment and commended the merger of the education ministries into a unified Education Family.
Prof. Maigari further inspected a coaster bus donated by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to the Gombe State College of Education and Legal Studies, Nafada.
The vehicle is expected to support the institution’s operations and improve its capacity to carry out its academic and administrative responsibilities.
In another engagement, the Commissioner addressed 280 participants drawn from Dukku, Funakaye, Yamaltu Deba and Gombe Local Government Areas under the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) Pads to Prosperity programme.
The initiative is designed to promote menstrual health while equipping women with skills for the production of reusable sanitary pads as a means of creating income and supporting community development.
The programme seeks to link health, skills acquisition and economic empowerment, particularly among women in participating communities.
The Commissioner also declared open an AGILE one-day capacity-building workshop on the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) for facilitators working in Adult and Non-Formal Education centres.
The workshop, held at Flourish Hotel, Gombe, was aimed at strengthening the capacity of facilitators to effectively manage complaints and improve accountability in the delivery of education programmes.
During an engagement with UNICEF under the Climate-Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services (CRIBS) initiative, Prof. Maigari highlighted the state government’s commitment to developing education infrastructure capable of withstanding climate-related risks.
She stressed the importance of protecting basic education services and ensuring that climate-related challenges do not undermine access to learning.
The Commissioner also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools through the AGILE programme.
She further pointed to tree-planting activities under the Gombe Goes Green initiative as part of efforts to promote healthier, safer and more climate-resilient learning environments.
The activities underscore the ministry’s focus on combining infrastructure development, institutional strengthening, skills acquisition, environmental sustainability and community empowerment in advancing education across Gombe State.
