NUJ Trustee Abbas Ibrahim Quits Unionism, Enters Kano Deputy Guber Race

A National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Northwest Zone A, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has resigned from his position to pursue an active political career, joining the race for Deputy Governor of Kano State on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).

Abbas formally tendered his resignation letter at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NUJ held in Jigawa State on Tuesday, citing ethical considerations and the need to avoid any conflict of interest between his union responsibilities and partisan politics.

He disclosed his decision in an interview with ‘The Historica Nigeria’ on Wednesday, explaining that his resignation was necessary to enable him to fully engage in active politics and contribute his best to public service.

“I’m now contesting for the Deputy Governor position under the platform of the Labour Party,” he said.

Abbas said his decision to venture into politics was motivated by his desire to contribute to the development of Kano State through public service, as well as calls from members of the public and other stakeholders within the state and at the national level.

He added that the Labour Party had unanimously endorsed him as its Deputy Governorship candidate, alongside Alhaji Hamisu San Turaki, the party’s governorship candidate in Kano State.

From Unionism To Politics

Abbas, a former Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, has been actively involved in journalism and trade unionism for decades.

His union leadership experience includes serving as Chairman of the Radio Kano Chapel, Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council for two terms and Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State Council.

During his tenure as Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, Abbas was credited with introducing initiatives aimed at strengthening the union and improving its financial sustainability.

One of the projects initiated during his administration was the NUJ Plaza at the NUJ Secretariat, conceived as an income-generating venture for the union.

His resignation marks a transition from journalism and union leadership to partisan politics, where he seeks to draw on his experience in advocacy, leadership and public engagement.

The former NUJ Kano State chairman expressed appreciation to journalists and union members for giving him the opportunity to serve and contribute to the development of the union.

He said he remained grateful for the support and cooperation he received throughout his years of service.

Abbas said his decision to leave the NUJ leadership was made with respect for the union’s principles and the need to maintain appropriate professional and ethical boundaries as he enters active politics.

His resignation brings an end to his tenure as a National Trustee of the NUJ and marks the beginning of a new political chapter as he seeks the Deputy Governorship of Kano State under the Labour Party.
