The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the full commencement of digital birth and death registration in Zamfara State under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system through the VitalReg platform.

The initiative, which took effect on July 1, 2026, is now operational across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to modernise civil registration and improve access to legal identity.

Speaking at a press briefing in Gusau on Tuesday, the Federal Commissioner of the NPC in Zamfara State, Rt. Hon. Nasiru Mu’azu, said the digital platform would provide faster registration services, round-the-clock online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, improved data security and a more reliable national database for planning and governance.

Mu’azu said Nigeria records about five million births annually, but birth registration coverage stands at only about 57 per cent, while death registration remains below 20 per cent.
