Kano Govt Orders Hawkers, Scavengers to Vacate Tal’udu Bridge, Warns of Prosecution

The Kano State Government has directed all hawkers and scavengers occupying the area beneath Tal’udu Bridge to vacate the premises immediately or face legal action.

The warning was issued by the Chairman of the Kano State Special Taskforce on Illegal Structures, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, during an inspection of the bridge on Monday as part of the committee’s ongoing enforcement exercise across the Kano metropolis, and made available to ‘The Historica Nigeria’ on Wednesday.

Dr. Sani said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has invested billions of naira in constructing modern bridges aimed at beautifying the city, improving environmental safety, easing traffic congestion, and enhancing urban development. He lamented that the government’s efforts were being undermined by individuals engaging in illegal activities around the bridges.

He stressed that the government would no longer tolerate such acts, assuring residents that the taskforce would take decisive measures to restore order and protect public infrastructure.

“This place was not designated for hawking, scavenging, or as a football field. Anyone found violating these regulations will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Dr. Sani said.

He noted that in countries such as Saudi Arabia and other developed nations, environmental regulations are strictly enforced, making it difficult to witness indiscriminate waste disposal or the misuse of public infrastructure.

“We must change our attitude, especially here in Kano, if we want to build a cleaner, safer, and more organized city,” he added.

During the enforcement exercise at the Chalawa Industrial Estate, the committee sealed a small-scale industry over allegations of encroaching on another person’s land. The owner was directed to appear before the committee with relevant ownership documents.
