First Lady Commissions Bwari Water Project, Mariya Bunkure Hails Tinubu, Wike

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday commissioned the newly completed Bwari Water Supply Network, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assuring residents that the ongoing clean water revolution in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would be extended to all six area councils.

The project, commissioned in Bwari Area Council, is designed to provide potable water to Bwari Satellite Town, Ushafa and surrounding communities, ending decades of dependence on untreated boreholes and streams.

The event was attended by the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, who described the project as the fulfilment of a promise under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Dr. Mariya expressed appreciation to the First Lady for commissioning the landmark project, describing her as a symbol of compassion, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

She also commended President Tinubu for his steadfast support towards the development of the nation’s capital, while praising the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, for his visionary and result-oriented leadership in accelerating infrastructure delivery across the FCT, particularly in underserved satellite communities.

According to her, the Bwari Water Supply Network represents another significant milestone in the administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life of residents through sustainable infrastructure development.

Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of President Tinubu, the First Lady said the project fulfilled a promise made by the administration to expand access to clean and safe drinking water across the Federal Capital Territory.

“As we mark our third anniversary in office, we are here today to celebrate the fulfilment of that promise right here in Bwari.

“Water is life. Clean water is dignity; it is a fundamental right, not a luxury. Today, we are inaugurating this massive, state-of-the-art 198-kilometre water pipeline network,” the President said through the First Lady.

He explained that the project links Bwari Township and neighbouring communities directly to the treated water supply from the Lower Usuma Dam, a development expected to reduce waterborne diseases and eliminate the reliance on individual boreholes.

President Tinubu also assured residents that the ongoing water infrastructure programme would continue across the remaining area councils.

“Last year, it was the Lower Usuma Dam Phase II rehabilitation; last month, it was the Karu Water Supply Network; today, it is Bwari. By the grace of God, before our tenure is through, this water revolution will fully cover Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji,” he said.

The President commended the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his fiscal discipline, political will and commitment to delivering the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda through strategic infrastructure projects.

Earlier, Wike recalled that President Tinubu had directed the extension of potable water to satellite towns during the inauguration of the Greater Abuja Water Project in 2025.

He explained that the administration had already commissioned the Karu Water Supply Network in June and was steadily implementing similar projects across other parts of the territory.

“Let people know that we are not only concentrating on roads; we are also ensuring that other critical sectors such as water supply receive equal attention,” the minister said.

The Bwari Water Supply Network forms part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s broader infrastructure renewal programme aimed at expanding access to essential public services and improving living standards for residents in satellite towns under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
