Kano CSOs Coalition Commends Waiya for Strengthening Government–Civil Society Relations

The Kano Patriotic CSOs Coalition Forum (KPCF), a coalition comprising over 451 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across Kano State, has commended the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for his efforts in strengthening collaboration between the Kano State Government and civil society organizations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the coalition described Waiya’s leadership as instrumental in fostering a more inclusive and participatory governance process through sustained engagement between government institutions and civil society actors. The group particularly praised the revival and repositioning of the Special Assignments Department within the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, describing it as a strategic platform that has enhanced consultation, dialogue and partnership between government and citizens.

The coalition also acknowledged the commitment of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to promoting inclusive governance and recognizing the critical role of civil society organizations as key stakeholders in the development process.

According to KPCF, the Ministry under Waiya’s leadership has initiated a series of constructive engagements with CSOs across the state, creating opportunities for policy discussions, feedback mechanisms and collective action on issues affecting residents of Kano State.

The coalition noted that the engagements have provided an effective channel for conveying citizens’ concerns, recommendations and aspirations to government for appropriate consideration and action.

KPCF further observed that for many years, communication and trust gaps existed between government institutions and civil society organizations, but said the ongoing civic engagement initiatives championed by the Commissioner have significantly improved mutual understanding, cooperation and respect between both parties.

The forum maintained that the renewed relationship has contributed to greater transparency, accountability and citizen-centred governance in the state.

As a coalition committed to peacebuilding, democratic governance, social justice and sustainable development, KPCF stressed that effective governance can only thrive when government institutions maintain open, transparent and continuous engagement with citizens and their representative organizations.

The coalition also commended Waiya for his role in the rehabilitation, empowerment and reintegration of repentant youths under the Safe Corridor Kano Model Programme, describing the initiative as a bold intervention aimed at addressing youth violence, thuggery, criminality, drug abuse and other social vices through sustainable and non-kinetic approaches.

According to the forum, the programme demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting peace, security and social stability across Kano State.

KPCF reiterated its support for the Commissioner and encouraged the Kano State Government to sustain and institutionalize the engagement mechanisms to ensure that citizens’ voices continue to shape public policies, programmes and development initiatives.

The coalition also called on civil society organizations across the state to take advantage of the existing engagement platforms to contribute meaningfully toward peacebuilding, accountability, social inclusion, good governance and sustainable development.

KPCF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Kano State Government and other stakeholders in advancing civic participation, democratic governance and sustainable development for the benefit of all citizens of Kano State.
