Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted nine people during an attack on Babban Saura (PW) community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday when the assailants invaded three houses in the community.

A community source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the attackers first broke into the residence of an elderly man and abducted two of his children.

They then moved to the home of a man identified as Sikiru, broke through the fence and entered the compound.

The source said Sikiru confronted the attackers after they entered his parlour and struggled with some of them before he was shot and killed. His wife and two children were subsequently abducted.

The attackers then raided a neighbouring house, where they abducted a woman identified as Maman Mubarak and her children.

Maman Mubarak was later rescued by soldiers and local vigilantes, while the other victims remained in captivity.

Usman Adamu, commander of the local vigilantes, confirmed the incident, saying nine people were initially abducted.

He said the vigilantes received a distress call and immediately alerted soldiers, who joined them in pursuing the attackers.

“We received a distress call that bandits had entered Babban Saura PW, and so we informed soldiers who joined us.

“We traced them to the Eastern Bypass area and succeeded in rescuing a woman, Maman Mubarak, whose children were among those kidnapped,” he said.

Adamu said security personnel made efforts to rescue the remaining victims, but the attackers escaped with them.

Another resident, who identified himself as Anas, said Sikiru had called him after the attackers stormed the community.

When a NAN correspondent visited the community, sympathisers had gathered at the deceased’s residence, while residents expressed concern over the security situation.

The attack occurred days after suspected bandits invaded nearby Kadaure community, where a man was reportedly killed and cows rustled.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Kaduna State Police Command were unsuccessful. Its Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansur Hassan, could not be reached by phone and had not responded to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing the report.
