Makinde picks ex-DSS DG Daura as running mate for 2027 presidential race

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has selected former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Daura, who served as DSS Director-General from 2015 to 2018, was unveiled as Makinde’s vice-presidential candidate during the party’s national convention held at Rilwan Adamu Square in Bauchi on Thursday.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said Makinde deliberately chose the former intelligence chief in response to the country’s prevailing security challenges.

According to the statement, Makinde believes Daura’s experience in the intelligence and security sector would contribute to addressing Nigeria’s security concerns if the APM wins the 2027 presidential election.

Daura served as DSS Director-General under former President Muhammadu Buhari before his removal from office in 2018.

Makinde was formally elected as the APM presidential candidate at the convention, where he pledged to work with politicians who share his vision for national development.

The Oyo State governor also promised to prioritise poverty reduction and improve the living conditions of millions of Nigerians, blaming recent economic hardship partly on what he described as poorly implemented government policies.

Makinde said he was prepared to pursue policies aimed at lifting Nigerians out of poverty and creating better economic opportunities across the country.

Explaining the choice of Bauchi as the venue for the convention, the governor said the state was selected because of its historical significance as the home state of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

The APM candidate further called for collaboration among like-minded political actors ahead of the 2027 elections, saying such cooperation would be necessary to achieve a better Nigeria.
