Kano weighs Sudan’s bid for Nasarawa Hospital, land for medical projects

The Kano State Government has indicated its willingness to consider a request by the Government of Sudan for the temporary use of Nasarawa Hospital as a teaching hospital for El-Razi University, alongside a separate request for land to establish a Sudanese hospital and community office in the state.

Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo gave the indication on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf when he received the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Sheikh Mohammed Abdelaal Haroon, during a courtesy visit to Kano.

Garo said the request for the temporary use of Nasarawa Hospital would be forwarded to Governor Yusuf for consideration after obtaining the necessary professional advice.

He added that the request for land for the proposed Sudanese hospital and community office would also receive the attention of the state government.

“The request for the temporary use of Nasarawa Hospital will be presented to His Excellency, the Governor, for consideration, while the request for land to establish a Sudanese hospital and community office in Kano will also receive the necessary attention,” he said.

The Deputy Governor also conveyed Governor Yusuf’s condolences to the government and people of Sudan over the ongoing conflict in the country, describing the humanitarian situation as tragic.

He prayed for the restoration of lasting peace, stability and national unity in Sudan.

Garo said Kano and Sudan share centuries-old historical ties rooted in religion, commerce, education and culture, stressing that the state remained committed to strengthening cooperation with Sudan in healthcare, education, agriculture, trade and cultural exchange.

He commended Ambassador Haroon for visiting Kano to engage with Sudanese nationals residing in the state, describing the visit as a demonstration of the embassy’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.

The Deputy Governor also appreciated the Sudanese government for awarding 15 scholarships to students from Kano, expressing optimism that the number would increase once peace returns to Sudan.

Earlier, Ambassador Haroon described the relationship between Nigeria and Sudan as longstanding and mutually beneficial, with Kano occupying a strategic position in the relationship.

The envoy lamented the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, saying it had resulted in loss of lives, displacement of thousands of people and widespread destruction of property.

Haroon appealed to the Kano State Government to approve the temporary use of Nasarawa Hospital by El-Razi University and allocate land for the construction of a Sudanese hospital and community office.

According to him, the proposed projects would deepen cooperation between Sudan and Kano, particularly in healthcare and education, while further strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two sides.

The development also comes against the backdrop of the presence of Elrazi Medical University, Kano, a private medical university in the state offering health-related courses, highlighting Kano’s growing role as a centre for medical education and healthcare development.
