Inuwa Waya Hails Gov Yusuf Over ECOWAS Education Ranking

Elder statesman Inuwa Waya has congratulated Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, following the state’s emergence as the highest-ranked sub-national government in education among member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This was contained in a statement signed by Inuwa Waya and made available to ‘The Historica Nigeria’ on Monday, in which he described the recognition as a landmark achievement reflecting the governor’s commitment to transforming the education sector through strategic investment and sound policy implementation.

According to Waya, the recognition, conferred through the University of Paris Sub-National Education Spending Index, demonstrates that Kano’s deliberate investment in education has earned both national and international acclaim.

He noted that Kano State’s emergence ahead of 209 first-level sub-national governments across the 15 ECOWAS member states underscores the impact of purposeful leadership, prudent management of public resources and a clear vision for educational development.

Waya attributed the achievement to Governor Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, coupled with unprecedented budgetary allocations of 29.5 per cent in 2024 and 30 per cent in 2025.

He said the administration has undertaken extensive reforms, including the construction of new schools, renovation of dilapidated classrooms, recruitment and training of teachers, as well as the provision of teaching and learning materials across the state.

According to him, the interventions have significantly strengthened Kano’s education system and laid a solid foundation for future generations.

Waya described the international recognition as not only a victory for the Kano State Government but also a source of pride for the people of Kano State and Nigeria, saying it reaffirms that sustained investment in education remains one of the most effective drivers of social and economic development.

He also joined the British High Commission in Nigeria and millions of Nigerians in congratulating Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano State on what he described as a well-deserved honour.

Waya expressed optimism that the recognition would inspire the state government to sustain its education reforms and consolidate the gains already recorded in the sector.
