ISEAN Honours Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa for Outstanding Contributions to Science Education

The Integrated Science Educators’ Association of Nigeria (ISEAN) has honoured the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science education, academic excellence and dedicated public service.

The honour was conferred during the Association’s 3rd Annual National Conference held at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, under the theme: “Innovative, Localized and AI-Driven Pedagogies for Transforming Integrated Science (Basic Science) and STEM Education in the 21st Century.”

Professor Kurawa, a renowned Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Bayero University, Kano, was recognised for his distinguished academic career spanning over three decades, his contributions to scientific research, and his transformational leadership in higher education.

During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano from 2020 to 2025, he oversaw major physical and academic reforms that strengthened the institution’s profile. He also previously served as Rector of Kano State Polytechnic and is currently Chairman of the Implementation Committee for the establishment of Gaya Polytechnic.

Following the presentation of the award, the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Education, Malam Salahuddeen Isa, who represented the Kano State Government, reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to sustaining quality educational policies that align with global best practices and emerging technologies.

He stressed that the future of education lies in innovation, urging students at all levels to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving global knowledge economy.

According to him, Kano has maintained its position as a pacesetter in education, recalling that the state pioneered science secondary education in Nigeria through the famous Dawakin Kudu experiment, which led to the establishment of the country’s first Science Secondary Schools at Dawakin Kudu and Dawakin Tofa.

The Permanent Secretary also charged the management and staff of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, the host institution, to continue improving academic standards, promote innovation and sustain efforts aimed at making the college one of the country’s leading teacher-training institutions.

The conference brought together science educators, researchers, academics and education stakeholders from across Nigeria to deliberate on innovative teaching methodologies, localisation of science education and the integration of Artificial Intelligence into science and STEM education.

Participants also advocated stronger collaboration among governments, tertiary institutions and professional bodies to strengthen science education and equip learners with the skills required to compete in the 21st-century global economy.
