Kano Ranks First Nationwide in NHIA Healthcare Enrolment

Kano State has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-performing state under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) Gateway enrolment programme for the first quarter of 2026, following an outstanding performance that saw it exceed its enrolment target by more than 110,000 beneficiaries.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), Aminu Ahmad Turaki, and made available to newsmen.

According to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) BHCPF Gateway Q1 2026 Enrolment Report, Kano enrolled 327,410 beneficiaries, significantly surpassing its projected target of 216,775, making it the best-performing state in the federation.

The agency described the achievement as a reflection of the Kano State Government’s sustained commitment to expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable and underserved residents, through the implementation of sustainable health insurance programmes.

KSCHMA attributed the milestone to the support of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has prioritised healthcare reforms and the expansion of universal health coverage across the state.

The agency also commended its Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, for providing strategic leadership through innovative reforms, intensive community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement and policies that have significantly increased enrolment under the state’s contributory healthcare scheme.

According to the statement, the outstanding performance demonstrates the effectiveness of KSCHMA’s people-centred policies, strategic partnerships and evidence-based implementation approach, which have continued to strengthen healthcare financing and improve access to essential health services across Kano State.

The agency expressed appreciation to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Federal Ministry of Health, healthcare providers, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, community-based organisations and other stakeholders for their support toward achieving the feat.

KSCHMA reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating the gains by expanding enrolment, improving service delivery and ensuring that every resident of Kano State has access to equitable, affordable and quality healthcare services as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
