ADC Kano rejects Naja’atu Muhammed’s caretaker committee, declares it illegal

The Kano State Transition Committee (STC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the purported constitution of a Caretaker Committee for the party’s Kano State chapter by Hajiya Naja’atu Muhammed, describing the action as illegal, unconstitutional and of no legal effect.

This was contained in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the ADC Kano State Chapter, Comrade Sa’idu Bello, on Monday, and made available to journalists in Kano.

The committee expressed concern over what it described as a unilateral attempt by Naja’atu Muhammed, who reportedly presented herself as the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North-West), to constitute a Caretaker Committee for the Kano chapter.

According to the statement, the action violates the provisions of the ADC Constitution and undermines the party’s legitimate leadership structures in the state.

The committee maintained that the office of Deputy National Chairman (North-West), which Naja’atu Muhammed reportedly claims to occupy, does not exist under the party’s amended constitution adopted at its National Convention held on April 14, 2026, in Abuja.

It explained that while the previous constitution recognised five Deputy National Chairmen, the amended constitution replaced that structure with only two National Chairmen representing the Northern and Southern zones.

The committee, therefore, argued that Naja’atu Muhammed no longer occupies any national office within the party and lacks the constitutional authority to exercise powers over the Kano State chapter or any other state in the North-West geopolitical zone.

The ADC Kano STC further contended that the power to constitute caretaker committees rests exclusively with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and other constitutionally recognised organs, not with any individual party official.

It added that no directive or mandate was issued by the National Headquarters authorising Naja’atu Muhammed to establish a caretaker committee in Kano State.

The committee also described the development as an act of anti-party activity allegedly aimed at creating division, confusion and a parallel leadership structure within the party in Kano State.

According to the statement, the purported caretaker committee violates established party procedures, which require that any caretaker arrangement must be approved through due constitutional process by the appropriate organs of the party.

The committee further expressed concern over what it described as Naja’atu Muhammed’s recent involvement in controversies, alleging that her actions were capable of undermining the peaceful growth and development of the ADC in Kano State.

It also alleged that external forces might be influencing the development with the intention of weakening the party in Kano State and across the Northern region.

The Kano State Transition Committee called on the national leadership of the ADC to intervene by taking necessary steps to prevent further actions capable of disrupting the party’s activities in the state, in the interest of peace, unity and the continued development of the party.
